Ever wondered what would happen if Spongebob somehow crossed over with Naruto, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma, Death Note and One Punch Man, and adopted everything shounen and weeaboo? Well, wonder no further, because someone just turned our most unusual fantasy into the most epic anime opening ever.
Narmak, a 20-year-old animator currently based in the US, recently posted an anime version of Spongebob Sqaurepants on both Newgrounds and #YouTube. The video, animated by Narmak from scratch (and without any external help, mind you), made waves over the past few weeks on social media for its outstanding use of classic #anime tropes, ranging from the blistering fight scenes, to the soul-crushing rivalry, to the (not so) subtle homoeroticism between the two main leads.
Even the J-rock song he picked is hella catchy and reminiscent of popular opening themes like Silhouette (from KANA-BOON), Kibou no Uta (from Ultra Tower), and Driver’s High (from L’Arc-en-Ciel). Narmak jokingly describes the sequence as Spongebob “if Spongebob were made by weeaboo trash.”
Check out the video for yourself:
The opening theme is called “Colors of the Heart,” originally sung by UVERworld, but covered here by Japanese Utaite teksy.
Just when we thought #Spongebob couldn’t possibly get any better. You’re welcome.
