Three years have passed since True Blood left our #TV screens forever, and while the ending may have disappointed Bill and Sookie shippers, at least we were comforted to know that the two were a couple in real life. But married couple Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin have something else in common: they're now both in the #XMen universe, thanks to Moyer's new Fox series The Gifted.
Before her time as telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse, Paquin spent the early 2000s portraying the mutant Rogue in multiple X-Men films. Rogue was heavily featured in the first couple movies, as she learned to deal with her abilities to absorb people's life force (and other mutants' powers) by physical touch. Fans were disappointed that Paquin's role in X-Men: Days of Future Past was almost entirely deleted for flow back in 2014 (until the "Rogue Cut" was released a year later).
Stephen Moyer Address Whether Anna Paquin Could Rejoin The X-Men Universe
In The Gifted, Moyer plays Reed Strucker, a father who must take his mutant children to an underground community where they can escape government agents. Just like upcoming projects X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, the live-action series will focus on younger mutants, so there is no word if previously featured characters will make an appearance. (Fox's Legion only hinted at Charles Xavier's existence.)
Stephen Moyer was asked by Entertainment Tonight about Anna Paquin's Rogue possibly making an appearance and he had this to say:
“Well, obviously she is in the X-Men universe. Her character, obviously, could possibly … I don’t know, I don’t quite understand the timeline because obviously, the X-Men timeline is very, very specific, so never say never, but I don’t know. I don’t want to say anything that gets me into trouble.”
Although we would love to see Moyer and Paquin reunite on the small screen, he makes a good point regarding the questionable timeline of the X-Men franchise. Since Days of Future Past wiped out the original trilogy, her story would likely be different. She somehow makes her way to the X-Men eventually, though — and since The Gifted is reportedly set in the present day, Rogue would be an adult, not the teenage runaway from the first film.
Nothing is impossible in a franchise with multiple timelines and universes to explore. With such an array of characters attached to X-Men, do not be surprised to see a film franchise character make an appearance. The Gifted cast already includes Blink, Polaris and Thunderbird, so never rule out the possibility of some familiar faces.
The Gifted premieres next fall on Fox.
