While most Marvel fans are closely following the news for movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War, there are still a bunch of other cool MCU projects coming down the road. One of these is , which had a major casting rumor earlier this week: Hawkeye would appear in a supporting role.

According to the rumor, Jeremy Renner's part in Ant-Man and the Wasp meant that he had to exit filming Mission Impossible 6. Many people questioned the validity of this report, and it looks like their skepticism was warranted.

'Ant-Man And The Wasp' Director Peyton Reed Comments On Hawkeye

Fans were becoming quite elated when they heard that there's a chance Jeremy Renner was starring in the highly-anticipated sequel to 2015's , which will feature Evangeline Lilly becoming a superhero alongside Paul Rudd.

However, director Peyton Reed went to Twitter to silence the excitement before things got out of control. He tweeted the following this morning:

Reed was clearly referring to the current political climate in a humorous way, while debunking the rumor. This most likely confirms that Hawkeye will not be seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Perhaps the rumor got started because Jeremy Renner was filming scenes for Avengers: Infinity War at the same time Rudd and Lilly were filming their movie?

Personally, I am neither disappointed nor delighted. While it would have been neat to see Ant-Man riding Hawkeye's arrows again, the upcoming film will work fine without Clint Barton.

Then again, is Reed just trying to throw us off Hawkeye's scent? He never outright said that Renner won't appear, and directors have been known to mislead audiences about what's in the final cut to keep their surprises intact. At the same time, it depends on which director you are talking about; for example, James Gunn is usually very straightforward, answering questions with a solid "yes" or "no."

Given that, there is still a small chance that Hawkeye could make an appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but I would say there is a 90 percent chance that he doesn't receive a second of screen time. This could turn out to be a Logan situation where Deadpool was rumored to star in the film — but Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds and James Mangold all shut it down hours later. When the movie came out, fans found out they'd been told a white lie, as Deadpool had his own scene before the start of the film.

So, maybe Hawkeye fits into a post-credits scene? But even if we don't get Hawkeye to appear, maybe another familiar Marvel superhero could show up!
