Not much is known about #DC's mysterious Aquaman, but with Saw's James Wan directing the feature we're all excited to see him bring all the horrors of the deep to life. Much of the movie will be set underwater, which will no doubt prove a challenge for the filmmakers but will be a visual treat for us.
And now, Justice League director Zack Snyder has given fans a first look at one of the submerged sequences in the movie. Keep your eyes peeled though — this isn't just an exciting sneak peek, but a vital hint for the plot of #Aquaman.
Ok, I'm just going to need a minute to recover from the image of the generously muscled, perpetually rippling Jason Momoa swimming like a deep sea god come to grace us mere mortals with his power and beauty and maybe some pretty seashells.
.... Alright, I'm ok. Moving on.
Formidable Master Of Oceans
While at first guess, you might think that Aquaman is just greeting some fellow undersea bro, but thanks to his helmet it looks like this is actually Orm the Ocean Master — the main antagonist for Aquaman, who now seems set to make an early appearance in #JusticeLeague. This character was also the villain for the 2015 animated movie Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.
A few months ago, James Wan revealed that Patrick Wilson will be playing Aquaman's villain. While not quite on the level of Black Manta, Arthur Curry's arch enemy, Orm is still a perpetual narwhal horn in Aquaman's side, often butting heads with him in the comics. Interestingly, Orm is actually Arthur's half brother, meaning their story is that of sibling rivalry turned seaweed-sour.
It looks like the plot of 2018's Aquaman will concern Orm taking advantage of Arthur's split loyalties to usurp him and sieze the throne of Atlantis. According to the film's synopsis, Orm seems to be dead set on leading the Atlanteans to war with humanity.
'Aquaman' will center on Aquaman as a reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis who is caught between land dwellers that are always polluting the globe and his own people who are ready to invade the surface.
The old brother-betrays-brother chestnut has worked well for superhero movies in the past, specifically in Marvel's Thor movies. If the #DCEU want to make it work again, they're going to have to find a way to keep it fresh and establish a strong relationship between Orm and Arthur. In the new footage, it already looks like the two are at odds, with Orm apparently seated on Atlantis' throne — so presumably, Justice League will set up the tense situation for Aquaman to explore.
With a stellar cast and a seasoned horror director, Aquaman is sure to thrill audiences when it splash lands into cinemas on October 5th, 2018. Before that, you can catch the triumphant Justice League on November 17th, 2017.
