While we know that DC is expected to release a Shazam! movie in 2019, they have yet to actually cast an actor to play the lightning-loving superhero. We do know that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been cast as the villainous Black Adam — with recent rumors suggesting that Warner Bros. was more interested in focusing on the villain than the hero — we have yet to actually hear about the film itself.
However, The Rock sent the internet into a frenzy when he chose #ArmieHammer as his personal favorite to play Shazam, leading to a lot of speculation that the actor may indeed have joined the #DCEU. During an interview with CinemaBlend, Hammer shed some light on the whole situation. He commented:
"Dude, so Dwayne said that thing and literally blew up my social media. I couldn't even open my Instagram. I thought my phone was gonna melt. But other than that no one's said anything. Yeah... I'm keeping my options open."
So while he has yet to hear anything official, it certainly sounds like he would love the opportunity to play the character. Hammer has had quite an interesting history with DC — he almost played Batman in George Miller's canned Justice League Mortal and previous rumors suggested that he was a favorite to play Hal Jordan in another upcoming DCEU film, Green Lantern Corps. Thus, it would make perfect sense for him to finally appear in Shazam. Let's hope DC feels the same way!
