Arrow's roster of Season 6 baddies just got bigger with its casting of 12 Monkeys actor Kirk Acevedo, as the infamous Richard Dragon. The DC series has been riding high since it's glorious Season 5 finale left fans at the edge of their seats. Much of the success that Arrow garnered in its fifth season can be attributed to the deadly villain, Prometheus, played by the excellent Josh Segarra. Needless to say that Arrow's sixth season needs to be truly outstanding — with some memorable villains — if it's to live up to its predecessor.

Luckily for us, Arrow's latest casting announcements have been nothing short of brilliant. First, we got the news that David Nykl will be reprising his role as Anatol, come Season 6. Then came the news that Person of Interest's Michael Emerson will also be playing a villainous role in some capacity. And, most recently, we learned that Glow's Sydelle Noel will be joining the as an FBI agent bent on exposing Oliver Queen for who he is. As if that wasn't exciting enough, now Deadline has reported, that the show is adding Agents of Shield's Kirk Acevedo to the mix.

Who is Richard Dragon?

Richard Dragon is one of 's best martial artists. In the comics, Dragon —believing that the Green Arrow had murdered his father — goes after the Emerald Archer.

What's interesting about Dragon is that he probably won't be the real Richard Dragon (who was a hero rather than a villain) as it was revealed in the New 52 comics that Ricardo Diaz, Jr. (who Acevedo is playing), killed the original Dragon to steal his identity.

In the comic, it was revealed the Diaz killed the original Dragon who was his sensei. All this means that Season 6 will be a particularly action heavy which is certainly good news for the fans. Season 5 was certainly a high point for the show with regards to its action stunts and Dragon's addition can only help elevate that.

What We Know About Dragon

Unlike the comics, this version of Richard Dragon (who will recur all season) won't be in a costume, or be a force for good as he's normally portrayed. Instead the version will be a grounded character despite being a drug lord in a universe where exist:

Talking to, EP Marc Guggenheim stated:

"You know, what I really like about our interpretation of Richard is, he’s very grounded. He’s not a flamboyant big bad, he doesn’t wear a costume, he really is a crimelord sort of in the Tobias Church model. For Tobias we only really saw him for about five episodes, so we were excited about th prospect of doing a cool, gritty crime lord, but for a longer period of time. We’ve never really done that on the show before, so it’s different."

The official description for Dragons' arc reads:

A hardened ex-con recently released from prison for crimes he didn’t commit, Ricardo Diaz (Acevedo) is bent on taking over Star City’s criminal underworld. A master in hand to hand combat, honed by years of life on the street, Diaz has yet to meet a foe he can’t take down

Given that Arrow plans to go in a gritty direction this season, Kirk Acevedo is certainly a good choice to play the character, especially since he's played the masculine tough type well before in Kingdom, Fringe and Syfy's 12 Monkeys. He certainly has the right physique for the role, which is probably a must, given how strong his character is said to be.

Arrow has had some pretty solid fight sequences (particularly last season), but Richard Dragon's arrival to the series means that Arrow will certainly raise the bar when Season 6 arrives October 12.

How do YOU feel about Richard Dragons inclusion in the Arrowverse?
