Arrow has been absolutely incredible this season, especially compared to its previous two seasons and the mediocre third season of The Flash. The show has returned to its roots, yet it has continued to keep things fresh and keep its viewers on our toes. But even with high expectations for its season finale, Arrow delivered one of the most action-packed, emotional and intense episodes we have ever seen — and gave us a shocking ending. Let's break down what happened.

Note: heavy spoilers follow for Arrow Season 5.

Lian Yu Is Destroyed ... Along With Every Single Character Besides Oliver And William

The season finale ended on an explosive note to say the least. The last couple minutes consisted of Oliver and Adrian Chase on a boat, leaving the island. Prometheus gave Oliver the choice to either kill him (and let the island blow up) or let him live (to see William die). Oliver almost escaped this situation by shooting Chase in the foot with an arrow and grabbing William.

Then, Chase gave a speech about how Oliver has won, but that he will be pretty lonely without all of his friends and family. Before Oliver is able to react, Chase pulls out a gun and shoots himself in the head, killing himself, which automatically activates all of the explosives on Lian Yu. The episode ends with the island erupting into explosions and being destroyed — and Oliver couldn't believe what he had just seen.

Is the show tricking us somehow, and our favorite characters will miraculously return next season? Or are they really all dead? It is difficult to tell what happened to everyone located on Lian Yu.

There are a few ways that Team Arrow could have survived the explosion. The team has been in many similar situations where they are under immense pressure. Felicity and Curtis could figure out how to get the plane running and escape the island without being blown to pieces. They could have run to the prison cell built by A.R.G.U.S., which means it could be explosion-proof. Besides that, there could be an event on The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow that could change the events of the Season 5 finale. Other than those two possibilities, no other (plausible) solution springs to mind.

Yes, there is a chance that Felicity, Diggle and the rest of Team Arrow just lost their lives. The producers of Arrow have been teasing all season long that the sixth season would be a soft reboot for the show. They only planned on running the show for five seasons — some actors' contracts may have ended or they had to leave the show for other obligations. Also, every single character on that island had their character arcs wrapped up perfectly right before the bombs went off. Given all of this, I wouldn't bet money that everyone died on the island, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

Personally, I believe that it's not this simple. While I don't believe Arrow would kill so many of its characters that easily, I doubt the show will bring everyone home safe and sound, negating the impact of the cliffhanger. Perhaps some characters survived, but it's likely that at least one didn't make it off the island.

My mind is still blown away from this epic season finale, and it is almost impossible to predict what happens yet — all we can do is appreciate that Arrow just gave us one of the best episodes of all-time!
