Arrow Season 5 introduced one of the show’s most formidable villains yet, in the form of Prometheus. Very little is known about the identity of this character, or why he has a grudge against Oliver. Only one thing is for sure: Prometheus wants to make Oliver’s life a living hell. He has already manipulated Oliver into killing Felicity’s boyfriend Billy. Viewers have been left dying to know why he is doing this — but, more importantly, we want to know who Prometheus is.

The idea of Tommy Merlyn being has been floating around for quite a while, but it seems more likely that we haven't met the person who became Prometheus yet. In Season 5 Episode 11, titled “Second Chances”, we dove deeper into the flashbacks, and I believe the answer to the riddle of Prometheus is found in Oliver’s time in Russia.

In the upcoming episodes, we are going to follow Oliver and Talia Al Ghul (Lexa Doig) on their mission to take down Konstantin Kovar (Dolph Lundgren). This set of events is most likely going end with Oliver killing Kovar. This will also be where the Prometheus story begins; because I believe Prometheus is the son of Constantine Kovar, Leonid Konstantinovitch Kovar — also known as former Teen Titan, Red Star.

What We Know So Far About Prometheus

Before we dive into Oliver’s time in Russia, let’s look at what we know about Prometheus, so we can better decipher who he might be. We know that Prometheus is a skilled combatant, having battled Oliver on several occasions. He is a tactical genius, and always seems to be one step ahead of Team Arrow. Prometheus’s fighting style looks familiar to Oliver, which means they might have had the same teacher. We know that he is punishing Oliver for something he did around the time he became “The Hood”. executive producer Marc Guggenheim spoke of Prometheus’s connection to Oliver in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“I can really only say that Oliver bears a measure of responsibility for the creation of Prometheus.”

The show is leading us to believe that Prometheus is the son of a man Oliver killed, named Justin Clayborne. This explanation is a red herring; however, it is important. The theme of Season 5 has been “legacy”. This refers to the character’s actions and their lineage. The idea that Prometheus is avenging his father is correct — we're just being misled about who his father really is.

Oliver's Adventures In Russia

Arrow has always used flashbacks as a storytelling device. In Season 2, they show used them to tie-in to what was happening in the present-day plot. This season has been a return to form, and I believe the events unfolding in Russia will have a direct effect on Team Arrow in the present — in the form of Prometheus.

Since the beginning of the season, the flashbacks have shown Oliver attempting to honor his word to Taiana (his island girlfriend from Season 4), by killing Konstantin Kovar. We have seen Oliver join the Bratva (the Russian Mob), and attempt to kill Kovar once already. This led to Oliver being captured and tortured, but he was rescued by Talia Al Ghul.

Watch Oliver team up with Talia Al Ghul and become the Arrow:

Talia has apparently been following Oliver’s exploits over the last 4 years, and wants to help him take down Kovar. She is highly trained and lethal, but is also calm and calculating. Oliver joins her and they begin their journey to eliminate Kovar and his empire. This is also the first time we see Oliver adorn the first edition “Arrow Suit” off the island.

All of the events in Russia are a secret to the rest of Team Arrow. The only other person who knows Oliver was in Russia is Susan Williams (Carly Pope), but her motive and backstory are just as shrouded in mystery as Prometheus's. She might be a harmless reporter, or Arrow could be using her in a similar fashion to how they used Isabel Rochev (Summer Glau) in Season 2. Her role is yet to be determined, but she does seem to have something to hide.

Prometheus Is Leonid Kovar

If we take everything we know about Prometheus, and compare it to what Arrow has done in the past, we can surmise that the big bad of this season is going to have some tie to DC Comics – even if it is very obscure. It just so happens that the man Oliver has vowed to kill in Russia has a son, who is a DC Comics character. Leonid Konstantinovitch Kovar is not a well-known character, but he does share the Kovar lineage. In the comics, Lenoid was known as Red Star, who was a member of the Teen Titans.

Since Dolph Lundgren is 59, that would put Leonid’s age anywhere from mid 20s to late 30s conservatively. He is the correct age, and he fits into the timeframe of Oliver becoming “The Hood”. He would have the motivation, and being the son of a wealthy mob boss, he would have all the resources needed to learn how to fight and fund his revenge on Oliver.

As I have already mentioned, this season of Arrow is all about the legacy we leave behind, and I believe Leonid is avenging the his father, and preserving his legacy. Seeing as Oliver became “The Hood” while he was in Russia, it would make sense that Oliver kills Konstantin, and Leonid becomes Prometheus to seek vengeance against him. Since we know Talia was around during this time-frame, this would also confirm Wendy Mercile’s comment that Talia will be a key part in the Prometheus storyline.

The History Of Red Star In DC Comics

Leonid Konstantinovitch Kovar made his first appearance under the name Starfire in Teen Titans #18 in 1968, and became the first Russian superhero in DC Comics. He subsequently changed his name to Red Star in New Teen Titans (vol. 1) #18 in 1982. Kovar is a Russian Patriot and communist, which makes him a unique hero.

Red Star gained the powers of flight, super-strength, and psychokinesis after an alien ship exploded and he was bombarded with an unknown energy. On top of his other abilities, he can also manipulate and resist many forms of radiation. He is a niche hero, but he has a strong following among Teen Titans fans.

We haven't seen Leonid Kovar on Arrow yet, but it seems very likely he will make his appearance towards the end of the season. All the evidence is pointing to Prometheus being someone who Oliver wronged around the time he put on the Arrow suit. Since he just put it on, I would bet money that Oliver and Talia are going to happen across Leonid in future flashbacks very soon.

The Leonid will most likely not have superhuman abilities on Arrow, but it wouldn’t be the first time that the has changed the abilities of a character. Although he is a hero in the comics, it would make sense that they would repurpose him as a villain – since they did the opposite with Captain Cold and Heatwave on .

In the end, this is just a theory, but it is more than possible. When you combine everything we know about Prometheus, with everything happening in the flashbacks, it seems likely that Leonid will exact vengeance on Oliver for killing his father. If this ends up being true, it would be a satisfying and logical conclusion to the Prometheus storyline, while still being something fresh. In the meantime, you can catch Arrow on Wednesdays at 8PM/ET on the CW.
