Ash, Brock and Misty. Combined, the original Pokémon: Indigo League trio made up one of the most iconic friend groups in gaming history. But it looks like Ash is ditching Brock and Misty for some new friends. And fans aren't exactly pleased.

The upcoming Pokémon anniversary movie, Pokémon the Movie 20: I Choose You! is headed to theaters in Japan on July 15th. It's both the first Pokémon movie in the Sun and Moon saga, and it's also commemorating the original Indigo League anime's release in 1997. But producers OLM have removed Brock and Misty from the upcoming film. And instead, they've replaced Ash's friends with two new children named Makoto and Souji.

Fans are sad to see the original two go. For many, Ash's relationship with Brock and Misty was one of the most memorable parts of the original anime. Brock was smart but stoic, a solid "straight man" to Ash's high energy and strong enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Misty brought some female representation into the friend group, showing young girls that Pokémon isn't just for boys. And she was peppy, charming and well-dressed to boot.

They were a perfect trio. And now, they're no more.

Fans Are Sad To See The Three Part Ways

OLM and Nintendo didn't officially announce that Brock and Misty are gone from Pokémon. But as soon as I Choose You!'s character roster was added online, fans began to connect the dots and realize Ash had replaced his childhood friends.

Or rather, Ash's friend group has been retconned, instead rebooted with a brand new roster. Seeing how Makoto and Souji are absolutely new to the franchise, and that they're replacing Brock and Misty, the new movie is going to have to convince fans that the change was worth the risk.

Many Pokémon anime fans aren't buying that. They want Brock and Misty back into the film.

Some said they were flat out turned off by the new movie, pointing out how iconic Misty and Brock were vital to Ash's growth as a trainer. They felt annoyed and upset by their favorite characters' sudden disappearances.

Others pointed to childhood nostalgia for the series, sad to see some of their favorite characters thrown to the waste bin just because of a new audience.

And with no sign in sight that Brock and Misty are coming back, some fans are giving up on the new film.

But A New Cast Of Characters Is Important For 2017

Look. Brock and Misty played an important role in the original Pokémon: Indigo League. But maybe it's time for some change.

In 20 years' time, trends have come and gone in anime. Brock was the lovable best friend and Misty was the rambunctious, high-energy female sidekick. And for the time period, it worked well. It was very '90s. But this isn't the '90s anymore. It's 2017. Pokémon has grown since those early days. And so has the gaming community. It's time for some new faces to the series, ones that fit the game's current demographic.

And it's not as if Brock and Misty have been killed off. They just aren't appearing in I Choose You! That's a major difference.

Yes, without Brock and Misty, we wouldn't have the amazing '90s and 2000s series that is Pokémon: Indigo League. That's true. But Pokémon the Movie 20: I Choose You! may be a new beginning for the series, one that introduces a new cast of lovable characters for a young generation. Let's hope that ends up being the case.
