Avengers 4 will mark a new beginning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because of that, a few characters we've come to know and love will meet their maker in Infinity War. And the primary hero rumored to bite the dust in the film has been Tony Stark. The billionaire playboy is essentially the default answer for "who will Thanos send to the underworld?"
Up until today, everything seemed to point to that fact. We learned earlier this year that Tony wouldn't be back to mentor Peter Parker in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, and there was no word on whether #RobertDowneyJr would return for Avengers 4, which started filming earlier this month. Well, it's time to stop speculating, folks, because RDJ was seen back on-set today.
It Looks Like Iron Man Is Coming Back For 'Avengers 4'
The Best of Marvel Twitter page recently released a batch of images from the Avengers 4 set. To our surprise, they featured none other than RDJ, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, #MarkRuffalo, Jon Favreau and director Anthony Russo having fun on set:
It definitely looks like Iron Man is coming back to fight alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and he's apparently going without his goatee. As a longtime fan of the character, I couldn't be more excited to see him back. Going by his civilian attire, it looks like Tony is enjoying some much-needed downtime after the #Avengers faced Thanos, his children and their pesky Infinity Stones.
Now, let's calm our excitement down for a few seconds and analyze the situation. It's important to keep in mind that this could also be a misdirect to make fans believe Tony makes it out of Infinity War alive. As we've learned, Marvel enjoys throwing curveballs at fans to keep its plots as secret as possible.
If Iron Man Does Live, Will He Play A Smaller Part After 'Avengers 4'?
Marvel has great plans lined up for the #MCU after Avengers 4, which involve giving the franchise a bigger cosmic perspective. So if Iron Man is still around after #InfinityWar, you may be wondering whether he'll be a big part of that bright future.
Back in July, Kevin Feige sat down for an interview with the Toronto Sun. During the chat, he explained that, while he was sure that Robert Downey Jr. would eventually hang up the armor, Tony Stark would continue his journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years to come. Essentially, he's hoping to make Tony a character as long-lasting as James Bond:
"I don't have to worry about that any time soon. I do think Iron Man, like Spider-Man, like Batman, like Superman, like James Bond has existed long before most of us were around and will exist long after most of us are gone. So it's inevitable at some point, but certainly nothing I have to think about anytime soon."
That makes sense. #TonyStark is the hero who made the MCU such a pop-culture phenomenon a decade ago, so Marvel can't retire him forever. But –– for now at least –– it looks like our favorite billionaire playboy has a bright future ahead of him.
We'll get to know more of how Iron Man fits into the larger MCU plans when Avengers: Infinity War hits the big screen on May 4, 2018. Meanwhile, check out RDJ's set video below:
Are you happy that Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are back? What do you expect to see in Avengers 4? Do you think these set photos are misdirection? Let me know in the comments!
