Avengers: Infinity War is shaping up to be even more of a potential mess than that which was threatening Captain America: Civil War, which had to juggle an ambitious cast list as well as the introduction of several new characters.

But, as managed to skirt the various plots and characters to pull off a fairly tight and thoroughly enjoyable movie, so we have confidence that directors Anthony and Joe Russo can pull it off once again with Infinity War.

Bringing together characters from all corners of the , Infinity War is Marvel's most ambitious project yet. And not just because of the collisions of worlds, but also because Thanos is coming to town in a much bigger way than before. It is, after all, Infinity War.

And so the big question has been both who and how the various superheroes are going to appear in the ensemble piece. Ever since Civil War everyone's been getting pretty excited about Tom Holland — the 's shiny new Spider-Man — and the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming did nothing but fuel those exciting flames.

And so one of the many big questions has been, will Holland swing back into action for Infinity War? Even before was introduced in his titular movie earlier this year we got the confirmation that we'd see him again in Infinity War, so what of the wall crawler?

The rights deal Marvel struck with Sony complicates the matter, as unlike other heroes in the MCU, Marvel can't just use willy-nilly. Back toward the end of October Holland told Variety that, as of that time, there was no deal in place for Spider-Man to appear in Infinity War:

"It’s all up in the air. I believe some sort of deal is in the mix, but I’m unclear as to what that deal is."

When Marvel Studios Pres Kevin Feige was asked for comment, he merely responded saying that it was a surprise, telling Collider that he didn't "want to spoil anything." Classic Feige response. But now a new cast list for Infinity War has gone up on Movie Casting Call, and there's a notable Spidey shaped hole in the list.

Here's a breakdown of the cast-list as according to the website — though keep in mind that this has not yet officially been confirmed by Marvel Studios or Disney, so take it with a pinch of salt.

  • Chris Hemsworth — Thor
  • Josh Brolin — Thanos
  • Chris Pratt — Star Lord / Peter Quill
  • Sebastian Stan — Bucky Barnes
  • Scarlett Johansson — Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow
  • Benedict Cumberbatch — Dr. Stephen Strange
  • Brie Larson — Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel
  • Zoe Saldana — Gamora
  • Karen Gillan — Nebula
  • Jeremy Renner — Clint Barton / Hawkeye
  • Chris Evans — Steve Rogers / Captain America
  • Elizabeth Olsen — Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet
  • Bradley Cooper — Rocket Raccoon
  • Vin Diesel — Groot
  • Samuel L. Jackson — Nick Fury
  • Paul Rudd — Scott Lang / Ant-Man
  • Benedict Wong — Wong
  • Dave Bautista — Drax
  • Paul Bettany — Vision
  • Chadwick Boseman — T’Challa / Black Panther
  • Mark Ruffalo — Bruce Banner / The Hulk
  • Robert Downey Jr. — Tony Stark / Iron Man

Aside from an absence of Spidey, it's also pretty interesting to note that Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel is included on the list, adding fuel to the speculation that she will debut in Infinity War before appearing in her solo movie, à la Spider-Man and Black Panther in Civil War.

So maybe we won't see Spider-Man in Infinity War after all. While he did have a role in many of the Infinity arcs of the comics, the MCU adaptation wouldn't lose all that much by not having his inclusion.

But, on the other hand, it may just be that Sony and Marvel are still working out a deal for the usage of the character in the ensemble piece. Or maybe they're saving him for the mysterious Avengers 4 — the as-yet untitled Infinity War sequel — as they are with Wasp (Evangeline Lilly). Time will tell, but in the meantime at least we have Homecoming to look forward to.

Avengers: Infinity War arrives May 4, 2018, and Tom Holland returns in Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7, 2017. Do you think Spider-Man will appear in Infinity War? Sound off in the comments below!
