Unless you've been living under a rock in a Batcave for the past few weeks, it's impossible to not notice storm that has taken over the Internet following 's casting as the Dark Knight. Whatever your opinion on the matter, I think I speak for most of us when I say we're about ready for a time out. Much like a well-needed vacation from work, I propose we spend a little time away from Batfleck and focus instead on something a little more relaxing, easy going, but nevertheless essential; the casting of Bruce Wayne's mentor, butler and father figure, Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

For your consideration, I've compiled a list of the names of five actors that have been linked to the part over the last couple of weeks, so give em' a read and let me know who you would most like to see move into Wayne Manor.

Michael Caine

Who He?

Two-time Oscar-winning actor, knight of the realm and present incumbent of Wayne Manor.

Why He could

Caine's Alfred was the emotional heartbeat of Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. No longer relegated to the role of comedic support that had characterized previous incarnations of the character, Caine delivered a performance of depth, nuance and tenderness. The octogenarian actor has also expressed a desire to return to the role.

Why He Won't

In casting Ben Affleck as Batman, Warner Bros. has shown that they want to break away from Batverse that Nolan created and Zack Snyder is said to be keen for a ‘different take’ on the character. It seems like Caine's run as Alfred could be over.

William Shatner

Who He?

Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Commander of the Federation Starship USS Enterprise, that's who. Oh, he also likes a good sing song and after Nickelback is probably Canada's most famous and beloved export, eh!

Why He Could

Shatner caused a Twitter storm last week when he jokingly declared his interest in the role, but while his intentions might have been mischievous, there's no doubting that he would be bring some comedic relief to the movie and it would be awesome to see the screen icon working at Wayne Manor.

Why He Won't

A question mark hangs over Shatner's ability to do a convincing English accent. Plus, the only role William Shatner has played over the past couple of years is the role of William Shatner. Without wanting to sound too harsh, can he really be taken seriously any more?

Timothy Dalton

Who He?

Had a License to Underwhelm as James Bond in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill and was more recently seen hamming it up as the bad guy in Hot Fuzz. Also starred in The Tourist, although will probably not want anybody to mention that.

Why He Could

Dalton is rumored to be the first choice for role and is being circled by Warner Bros. He's the perfect age for the elderly-yet-sprightly Alfred, does posh English accents very well and can grow an excellent mustache.

Why He Won't

It seems that the Bat-shaped ball is very much in Dalton's court and it's his gig to refuse. Perhaps he'll turn it down because he doesn't think Ben Affleck will make a good Batman (that was a joke that in no way reflects the opinions of Mr Dalton.)

Jeremy Irons

Who He?

Classically-trained actor and star of stage and screen, Irons won an Academy Award for Reversal of Fortune. He led Bruce Willis on a merry dance in Die Hard with a Vengeance and has a surname that suggests he should have been born in Westeros. Last seen dickin' around Rome in The Borgias.

Why He Could

Because a recent fan-made Batman vs Superman trailer made it look like casting Irons in the role of Alfred would be the greatest thing ever.

Why He Won't

It could be a question of commitment. Irons has a varied and eclectic resume and is also committed to his charitable work, so he might be reticent to sign up for a multi-picture deal.

Adam West

Who He?

Famously wore the cowl (although it looked more like a hollowed out eggplant) in the 1960s TV series. He's also the mayor of Quahog.

Why He Could

WestisBest is petitioning to get the oldest surviving Bat-actor a part in the movie, so what better role than Bruce Wayne's butler? It would be a nice homage to Batman's TV beginnings and might go some way to placate the fanboy vitriol towards Ben Affleck's casting.

Why He Won't

Casting West as Alfred could look like a cheap gimmick and considering the earnest tone of Snyder's Man of Steel it seems highly unlikely. Perhaps West would be better served getting a small walk-on cameo, perhaps as a Shark Repellent Bat-Spray salesman.

It's now over to you. Let me know your top choice to play Alfred in the comment section below. And if anybody so much as breathes a word of Batfleck, Michael Caine will come round your house and hobble you, Misery style. You've been warned.

*The above threat of hobbling was not meant in earnest so please don't take it seriously. Unless of course you mention Ben Affleck...
