After four-and-a-half seasons of The Vampire Diaries, it's hard to picture anybody other than portraying Elena Gilbert (and her two doppelgängers). The 24-year-old Bulgarian-born actress has proven time and again that she has the acting skills to play three distinct characters on-screen (sometimes even simultaneously), and I doubt any fans of TVD have any issue with her portrayals. However, did you know that Nina wasn't the casting director's first choice for the female lead role? There was someone else who was being more than considered by the network:

That's right. was the main actress considered for Elena's role. 's little sister came extremely close to landing the part - until the producers gave Nina's audition tape a second glance and decided to risk it with the stunning brunette, which, in retrospect, has proven to be a perfect casting choice.

What do you think? Would Ashlee have made a good Elena (and other members of the Petrova bloodline)? Can you picture anyone other than Nina Dobrev leading the show?

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays on The CW at 8 PM (EST).
