The founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, broke down the human psyche into three distinct parts: The id, the super-ego and the ego. The id centers on our animal instinct, the super-ego is the residue of ingrained, societal rules (or "conscience"), and the ego is a balanced mediator, attempting to satisfy our animalistic desires while keeping the peace with the super-ego's belief system.

Most healthy, law abiding citizens manage to successfully control their animalistic desires, the id part of their psyche. But what if, due to a set of precise circumstances, the super-ego and ego eroded away, and our inner animal drives were unleashed?

is a long-term passion project of Gunn's — it has taken nine years to reach the big screen — motivated by his fascination with real-life social experiments that highlight the dark side of human nature. Although Gunn wrote the screenplay, Wolf Creek director Greg McLean takes on directing duties.

Admittedly, the concept itself isn't new, taking inspiration from Kinji Fukasaku's Japanse hit, Battle Royale (2000). But that doesn't make the narrative any less compelling, especially with a cast including Scrubs actor John C. McGinley, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn, Adria Arjona and Melonie Diaz.
