Ben Affleck has been a public figure since the late '90s, but in recent years, he has risen through the ranks as one of the top directors, and of course, is currently Bruce Wayne/Batman in the #DCEU. Affleck is also active in world affairs, and has spoken before the Senate in hopes to broaden America's assistance in the Congo. With all the things going on in Affleck's life, It’s easy to look at it from the outside and assume it's perfect.
But a recent revelation by the actor shows that challenges and hardships can come at you no matter who you are.
He took to his Facebook page with a heartfelt post addressing his recent time in rehab, and the fact that he has been coping with his alcoholism for some time now. The complete post is as follows:
I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I've dealt with in the past and will continue to confront. I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step. I'm lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I've done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.
This post serves a greater purpose then some might think. By #BenAffleck posting this for the world to see, he is doing the one thing that many of the over 76 million people afflicted with the disease of alcoholism find extremely difficult to do. He is talking about an issue that has had a stigma attached to it for too long and reminds us that even superheroes sometimes need help.
He is not only showing strength of character, but also accountability for himself and his family. His first step in recovery is a substantial one for not only him, but the millions of other people that will be inspired by his actions. He is declaring to the world that he suffers from alcoholism, but it is not what defines him. He mentions the strong support of his family, which is also a very important factor in maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle.
Affleck’s actions show the level of commitment he is striving for in his recovery. As most of us know, putting your personal information out to the world is no easy feat. The fact that he shared his life with all of us was to remind those that suffer from addiction/alcoholism that they are not alone, and they too can seek help that will help them find the path to recovery. Our thoughts and prayers go to Ben Affleck and his family, and we wish him all the best on his road to recovery.
