Finally, we have some news coming out of Marvel regarding their first female solo film. News from co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck about Captain Marvel has been few and far between. In fact, the latest update about the film came earlier this year during , where we learned that Samuel L. Jackson would co-star alongside Brie Larson in the movie in the 90's.

However, the most buzz-worthy tidbit was that Carol Danvers will take on the shape-shifting aliens, the Skrulls. Now, after months of waiting, Variety is reporting that Bloodline star Ben Mendelsohn is being eyed to star as the main villain for the upcoming superhero flick.

That's some good news coming out of the MCU, considering Mendelsohn's Emmy award-winning performance in Bloodline. The 48-year-old actor has quickly developed a reputation that allowed him to jump from one villain role to another. After starring in Rogue One as a big bad, Mendelsohn will join Robin Hood: Origins in another villainous role as Sheriff of Nottingham. Although there aren't any definitive reports that say what role Mendelsohn will play — chances are it'll be as the leader of the Skrulls.

The Skrulls are an alien race whose empire was built on the backs of their advanced technology, thanks to the experimentation brought on the Celestials. The Celestials' experiments gave birth to three major races. The immortal Skrullian Eternals (who weren't so immortal after all), the "normals," who were capable of shape shifting only into Celestial creatures, and the shape-shifting Deviants, who would go on to wipe out the other two. They would eventually rage war against the humanoid race, Kree of Hala, before looking to invade the earth. However, in the comics, it was the Fantastic Four who stopped them.

If Mendelsohn does in fact agree to play the role that directors Fleck and Boden created for him, it'll be interesting to see how the Skrulls will be depicted. With the way news is coming out of the Captain Marvel camp, we'll probably be waiting quite some time before we get an update.

Captain Marvel won't hit theaters until March 8, 2019, but you can catch Mendelsohn in Ready Player One, March 30, 2018.
