2016 was undoubtedly a year of ups and downs — luckily, there were a lot of ups when it came to television. Returning favourites like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Supergirl, Daredevil and Black Mirror were welcomed back with open arms. Stranger Things captured the world with the awesome group of young stars, its amazing story, the return of Winona Ryder and of course, Barb. Westworld also took the world by storm with its mix of a stellar cast, robots and a dark and twisted storyline.

Now that we are into 2017, it's time to get prepared for some new hits and a couple of returning favorites getting a new lease on life. Already, a major trend seems to emerging in 2017's TV line-up: many of the most-anticipated shows of the year have a kick-ass man of action in the lead (and one female too, in form of The Defenders's Jessica Jones).

Loads of fight scenes, more explosions, superpowers, twists, turns and betrayals are just some of the things we have to look forward to this year. Out of the many new shows hitting our screens in 2017, here are six of the best action shows coming our way!

1) Iron Fist

Premiere Date: March 17th on Netflix.

What's It About? Martial arts expert & Buddhist monk Danny Rand returns to New York City after being missing for 15 years, and tries to take back his family company. Danny must then choose between his family or as his duties as the Iron Fist.

Why You Should Watch It: This is Marvel Netflix's fourth series, which will introduce us to the fourth and final member of The Defenders: . We have had a blind human, an ex-superhero and an super-powered experiment, and now we're about to get a little bit of magic in the universe.

2) 24: Legacy

Premiere Date: February 5th on FOX.

What's It About? After leading a mission to take out a terrorist threat, Eric Carter returns home only to discover he and his squadron are being hunted down for assassinating the terrorist leader. Forced to seek shelter with CTU, Carter must work with the organization to stop a terrorist attack on American soil.

Why You Should Watch It: Set three years after we last saw Jack Bauer, everything about 24: Legacy is new and fresh, but still revolves around the CTU, so we can definitely expect some traitors and moles. Instead of having 24 episodes like the previous seasons, will only have 12, and will introduce us to a whole new group of people and their stories. Can a new leading man successfully restore 24 to its former glory?

3) Legion

Premiere Date: February 8th on FX.

What's It About? David Haller has had schizophrenia since he was a kid and has bounced from one psychiatric hospital to another. But when David comes across another patient, he starts to believe that their might be more to his 'hallucinations' than meets the eye.

Why You Should Watch It: The first series to be connected to the X-Men film universe, focuses on David Haller, the mutant son of Charles Xavier, who has dissociative identity disorder; in the comics, each one of his personas controls a different aspect of his psionic power. Although it's unlikely we'll see the full extent of his comic book powers, this show looks to be taking us back to the beginning to see one of the most powerful mutants getting his powers.

4) Taboo

Premiere Date: January 10th on FX.

What's It About? Presumed dead by everyone including his family, James Keziah Delaney returns to London after traveling the world and attempts to get his share in his father's shipping empire. But James's family start to play dirty to keep the inheritance out his hands for their own greedy reasons.

Why You Should Watch It: Because it's Tom Hardy! If that's not enough to convince you, it was created by Steve Knight (Peaky Blinders), Tom, and his father, Chips Hardy. It's dark, violent, and gritty, and reads like a revenge flick with a touch of the dark arts. Oh, and it has in it!

5) Prison Break

Premiere Date: 2017 on FOX.

What's It About? After T-Bag hands over some information, Lincoln and Sara discover that Michael — who was presumed dead after sacrificing himself for his family — is still alive in a Yemen prison.

Why You Should Watch It: Fox is bringing back another one of its hits, and this time, they are reuniting the Scofield brothers (even after one of them died at the end of the last series!). Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell are set to return (after starring together on The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow), as are a lot of the original cast. Like 24, only time will tell if FOX pull off the revival of one of their old shows.

6) The Defenders

Premiere Date: 2017 on Netflix.

What's It About? We've known it was coming for a long time, but this year, will finally be hitting our screens! Not a lot is known about the show, but it will unite Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, as they face their biggest threat yet.

Why You Should Watch It: For any fans of the Marvel Netflix shows, seeing these four heroes working together to defeat a new bad guy is frankly unmissable. Plus, it has Sigourney Weaver in it!

With so much buzz and so many big names across these shows, it will be interesting to see which men of action succeed, and which fail. Hype might be high for these 6 high-octane shows, but they each need to capture viewers' interest between explosions and fight sequences to keep us coming back for more.
