Hundreds of films were released last year, giving us plenty of characters to fall in love with. Some of them will be cherished forever and some will, unfortunately, never get mentioned again. Here, I take you through 10 characters from 2016 that will stand the test of time and be remembered for years to come — for all the right reasons.

1. Norman Nordstrom ('Don't Breathe')

The blind man in Don't Breathe was an unforgettable character played by Stephen Lang. Although you would initially see him as harmless and weak, that couldn't be further from the truth. He was intimidating and scary. Norman Nordstrom is an inspiring character. He shows that even though some people may have disabilities, they don't necessarily have to set you back. Norman is capable of anything, and doesn't let his blindness effect him.

2. Nancy Adams ('The Shallows')

Blake Lively plays tough, young, medical student Nancy who is attacked by a great white shark. Carrying the whole film by herself, Blake Lively creates a character that many young women can look up to. She is strong, smart and resourceful. Not everyone nay be able to relate to surviving a shark attack, but Nancy is certainly relatable for her will to survive.

The scenes where she looks after an injured seagull shows her character's humanity. If it weren't for Lively's portrayal of this character, Nancy might not have been remembered beyond 2016.

3. Darcy Banker ('Green Room')

This is probably Patrick Stewart's most obscure and unusual role to date. He creates an extremely unsettling neo-Nazi in Green Room. This character will be remembered for being terrifying and someone you wouldn't want to cross.

Darcy is commanding to his inferiors and effortlessly sets up their deaths as if it's no big deal. He is the leader of the gang and they all want to please him. He has a demeanor that lets you know he's in charge. In fact, his character is by far the best part of the film.

4. Holland March ('The Nice Guys')

Ryan Gosling plays Holland March, an incompetent detective who tries his best to provide for his daughter, but fails miserably. He is a lovable guy that gives us plenty of laughs and is instantly memorable because of how hard he tries. When he does succeed, it's mostly down to luck or just an accident, but he still gives it his best shot.

Motivation is something this character doesn't lack and that is something many audiences will be able to relate with.

Holland is quite different from any other Gosling character, and he does it flawlessly. He makes the character cool and refreshing.

5. Saroo Brierley ('Lion')

This character, played by Dev Patel, is one of the most inspirational characters to ever grace a cinema screen. The fact that it is a true story makes it even more touching. The character, who lost touch with his entire family in India at the age of five, uses Google Earth to track them down. Saroo Brierley will never be forgotten because of his determination and his will to carry on even though all the odds are against him.

6. Nadine ('The Edge Of Seventeen')

Hailee Steinfeld plays a depressed teenager in this comedy drama. Nadine is a character that many teenagers can look to. She teaches people that not everything is the end of the world. She will be remembered for being an inspiration to fellow teenagers when going through a difficult time.

7. The Female Ghostbusters ('Ghostbusters')

We all know what the Ghostbusters are about, but in 2016 that all changed. A female group of Ghostbusters hit our screens and it was amazing. They all have to be included in this list because all four of them will be remembered for different reasons.

Abbie Yates is a serious researcher but is also known for playing practical jokes on people. Patty Tolan is the street smart woman of the group. Erin Gilbert is the motivated one who never wants to give up, and Holtzmann was the flirty ghostbuster (and the definition of badass in this film). Her dance to Rhythm Of The Night is unforgettable:

They all have their individuality and should be remembered for being hilarious and giving the Ghostbusters universe a change up.

2016 gave us plenty of amazing characters. We had many incredible and inspirational characters last year, so let's see what 2017 has to offer us.
