Recently, a Twitter leak has "confirmed" Lucasfilm has applied for a trademark on the title Star Wars: Rivals. Truthfully, this title doesn't give us much information on what this future movie/TV series/book/video game will even be about as there are so many rivalries in the Star Wars universe.
This title sparked a debate between a few peers and myself on what the biggest and best rivalries in the Star Wars universe have been. As such, I have come up with a solid ranking of the 11 greatest rivalries we've ever seen in a galaxy far, far away.
11. Star Wars Fans Vs. Jar-Jar Binks
This one's on the boundary of cheating, but it needed to be included on this list before we begin our top 10. While there are a handful of Star Wars fans out there that enjoy the prequel trilogy for what it is (including myself), almost every Star Wars fan can agree that Jar-Jar Binks is the worst character ever. He has been bashed so badly by all Star Wars fans that it ruined the actor's life and made the flawed but enjoyable prequel trilogy look so much worse. On a positive note, Jar-Jar's canonical fate made fans feel a little bit better.
10. Finn Vs. The First Order
This was one of the biggest conflicts portrayed in The Force Awakens, even larger than the Resistance vs. the First Order itself. Finn was a stormtrooper for the First Order until he realized that he didn't want to be a part of it anymore after witnessing all of the horrible things they did.
While Finn doesn't have a stable conflict with a specific person (even though he has one elevating with Captain Phasma), we know that he truly hates the First Order and will do anything in his power to defeat them in the next two installments in the sequel trilogy.
9. Rey Vs. Kylo Ren
This conflict is just starting out yet it is obvious it will become an epic feud by the time of Star Wars: Episode IX. Rey and Kylo Ren hadn't met before, but they'd both heard of each other before they meet near the end of #TheForceAwakens.
Kylo Ren knows Rey's origins and knows that she is a potential threat to the First Order while Rey is learning how to use her Jedi powers and knows Kylo Ren was a padawan that fell to the Dark Side in his grandfather's footsteps. Rey may have had Leia's mentality that Kylo Ren could switch back over to the light side, but she quickly threw that idea away when she saw Ben Solo kill his father without hesitation.
8. Yoda Vs. Palpatine
Yoda is the wisest Jedi of them all and Darth Sidious is the wise ruler of the Sith — and together, they made for one awesome rivalry. Yoda and even Mace Windu felt Palpatine's evil presence throughout the prequel trilogy yet they just couldn't place their finger on who ruled the Sith until it was too late.
However, they never trusted Chancellor Palpatine and Yoda and the Emperor especially always had a funky relationship. Their final duel in Revenge of the Sith was symbolic of Jedi vs. Sith — and the Jedi had lost.
7. Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Darth Maul
One of the biggest mistakes the prequel trilogy made in my eyes was the fact that they didn't take advantage of the rivalry between Obi-Wan Kenobi and his master's killer, Darth Maul. Fortunately, Star Wars: The Clone Wars had Darth Maul return from the dead and the tension between the two characters increased.
Now in Star Wars: Rebels, we are going to see old Obi-Wan Kenobi face off against Maul again — perhaps for the final time. Overall, Maul's hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi and their epic conflict gives them a spot on this list.
6. Han Solo Vs. Jabba the Hutt
Han Solo and Boba Fett definitely had major conflict, but Boba was a bounty hunter hired by Jabba the Hutt. Of course, one can argue that there was no conflict between the two characters besides the fact that Han owed Jabba a major debt and all, but Jabba's dream was to hang a frozen-in-carbonite Han Solo as a decoration. Han had a deep hatred for the slimy slug as well and hopefully in the Han Solo anthology film, this conflict will be expanded on.
5. Jedi Vs. Sith
The Jedi and the Sith are supposedly the biggest rivalry in the entire galaxy as they fought for centuries over the fate of the entire universe. Many non-canonical sources such as the Old Republic comics, books, and video games really shined a light on these two opposing forces. When you look at the Jedi vs. Sith from a canon point of view, they are viewed as an ancient religion and while the conflict is definitely still there, the new universe still has yet to expand on this conflict.

4. Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
Perhaps the most tragic conflict of them all is Anakin Skywalker-turned-Darth Vader versus Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan was Anakin's master for years and they were practically brothers until Revenge of the Sith when Anakin fell to the dark side and became Darth Vader.
After that, he was pitted against his old master in one of the most emotional sequences in the entire saga. Anakin's hatred for Obi-Wan was far stronger than Maul's and it continued for decades until Vader killed his old master without any hesitation.
3. Rebels Vs. The Empire
Personally, I find the conflict between the Rebels and the Empire to be stronger and much more personal in the canonical universe. The Empire took over the entire galaxy and instilled it in fear and they had no other options but a small sliver of hope. The Rebel Alliance formed in Rebels and then Rogue One really showed how much the Rebels despised the Empire and they would do anything to take them down. The original trilogy shows a fantastic arc where the Rebels beat the Empire and it is one of the best victories in cinematic history.
2. Anakin Skywalker Vs. Darth Vader
I was about to put this at number one as this is really the main conflict of six Star Wars movies. Anakin started receiving visions of his inevitable future during the Clone Wars and he could not avoid it as much as he tried. There was an inner conflict and finally in Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker fell to the dark side and was taken over by the ruthless Darth Vader.
For decades, Anakin was still living underneath the helmet waiting for a chance at redemption, even though Darth Vader told Luke that Anakin was no more. Darth Vader was a cold, dark, ruthless villain who had a little glimmer of hope still inside him that Palpatine was trying to keep tucked away. Finally, Anakin overcame Vader and killed the Emperor and fulfilled the prophecy at the end of Return of the Jedi.
1. Luke Skywalker Vs. Darth Vader
Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader is not only the best conflict in the entire Star Wars universe but one of the best in fiction. The original trilogy paired father against son in an epic conflict arc that began with Luke trying to avenge his old master and save the galaxy.
However, the rivalry became a lot more complicated when it was revealed in The Empire Strikes Back that Darth Vader was Luke's father. Even though they still hate each other and clash it out, they have connected on a father/son level as well. The original trilogy revolved around this main conflict, which is still extremely unique and intriguing to this day and is easily the strongest and the best in the entire galaxy.
