Steven Universe has quickly garnered a reputation of being one of the hottest animated series to hit Cartoon Network in recent memory. Not only is it the first original series on the network to be created by a woman, it also almost exclusively features people of color on its cast. Although episodes are traditionally only about 10 minutes long, there are occasions where episodes are shown back to back in a half-hour block. Now that #StevenUniverse is in its fourth season, there are many memorable quotes that are enjoyable, thoughtful and humorous. Check out the 12 best below:
1. Episode: 'Laser Light Cannon'
Amethyst: "I'm just sayin'! Even if she did leave it with him, he probably broke it, or lost it, or dropped it in the ocean somehow."
Steven is told some hard truths about his nice guy but messed-up dad, Greg. He knows that his mom was the leader of the Crystal Gems, who successfully led a rebellion against the Gem Homeworld 5,500 years ago. He knows that if his mom were around, she'd be able to stop the Red Eye, but suspects that his dad might know where his mom's light cannon is. This line only highlights how messed up Greg might be and how little faith that Amethyst and Pearl actually have in him.
2. Episode: 'Laser Light Cannon'
Greg: "If every pork chop were perfect, we wouldn't have hotdogs!"
Greg is trying to make Steven feel better about having broken a picture of Greg and Rose together, but the thing is, Greg has perhaps illustrated the phrase "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade!" Steven breaking the photo has ended up with the solution to the problem — they found the laser light cannon behind the photo. Also, Greg has perhaps shown the audience a way to find optimism in today's world.
3. Episode: 'Laser Light Cannon'
Greg: "I don't know what a magic lady like her ever saw in a plain old dope like me."
Greg Universe is clearly still smitten with his long lost love Rose Quartz. Many years after she gave up her physical form to give birth to their son, Steven, it's clear that Greg is still hung up on the leader of the rebellion. Certainly, Greg has never really made much of himself: He still lives in the back of a van and keeps most of his stuff in a storage facility because he doesn't have any room for personal effects from his old life with Rose. He also seems to realize that there's nothing really remarkable about him; he's just a lout that fell in love with a remarkable woman.
4. Episode: 'Tiger Millionaire'
Pearl: "You're always putting us in danger with your little outbursts! [Amethyst ignoring her] Ugh, you are just... so childish!"
Amethyst: "Yeah, yeah. Don't forget: reckless, vulgar, 'loudmouthed.' And that's just what makes me so AWESOME!! RIGHT, GARNET?!!"
With "Tiger Millionaire" comes the realization that we are almost through the first season. While we've gotten a great deal of details revealed regarding the Crystal Gems, we're now getting some insight into Amethyst's spunk. She has no desire to march to the beat of a typical Crystal Gem and would prefer to follow the example set by Rose Quartz — being free to be different. She's no shrinking violet; if she doesn't like something, she'll let someone know pretty quickly.
5. Episode: 'Full Disclosure'
Ronaldo: "Sounds typical. But it's a good reminder. This is no easy path we've chosen here. There are... sacrifices. Look at them all down there, Steven. It's our duty to let those simple people live out their simple lives, without ever knowing the burden of being friends with us."
Steven is starting to appreciate just how nasty being a Crystal Gem could be, and the bottom line is that like his mother before him, he will end up working to save the world several times over in order that he and his loved ones are kept safe. Ronaldo reminds Steven that sometimes being a hero does take sacrifice and hard work, and that's something he will have to come to terms with throughout his life.
6. Episode: 'Love Letters'
Jamie: "Yeah, life is crazy. One day, you're right here in Beach City delivering mail and then the next thing you know you're on a bus to Kansas, following your dreams of becoming an actor. 'Follow your dreams,' they said. But no one said anything about all the rejection and sadness there was to be found."
If there's any one statement that could sum up the challenges found in becoming an adult, this could be it. As kids, we may be encouraged to find our dreams and spend a lifetime chasing those dreams. We might forget at times that the pursuit of our dreams could end in rejection and that we might end up feeling somewhat defeated in the end.
7. Episode: 'Historical Friction'
Steven: "Everybody gets stuff wrong, and then you have to keep going and it's hard, which is why it's great when you never stop trying!"
This is probably one of the nuggets of truth that people spend a lifetime learning, which is what makes this quote so awesome. We forget at times that we will screw up somewhere along the way, and it's in our decisions to continue onward beyond the mistake, whether we need to fix the error or not, that makes us stronger. Much as we may try to do things absolutely right the first (or even the 21st time), there are mistakes that are made, and as tough as the decision to keep going might be, it is exactly that decision to keep trying to achieve goals that makes us human.
8. Episode: 'Friend Ship'
Garnet: "It's not easy being in control. I have weaknesses too, but I choose not to let them consume me. I struggle to stay strong because I know the impact I have on everyone."
It's interesting how the strongest among us are often believed to be free of any weaknesses. Ask anyone who is believed to be strong and they will admit that appearances can be deceiving. In fact, it's those individuals who recognize that it takes a great deal of strength to recognize one's own weaknesses and continue to appear strong because there are others counting on them.
9. Episode: 'Friend Ship'
Garnet: "There are times when I look up to you for strength. You are your own gem. You control your destiny. Not me, not Rose, not Steven. But you must choose to be strong, so we can move forward."
Perhaps the most important part of what Garnet says in this episode is that "you control your destiny." There are people who believe that what they do is determined by what others do. In reality, we all need to understand that we are in charge of our own destinies and fates, and that we are our own special gems.
10. Season 3: 'Same Old World'
Steven: "Yeah, but nothing is still on Earth. Everything's always changing — the leaves, the cities — even Jersey changes. My dad says the rest stops used to be pretty gross, but now they have sushi. This isn't the same world that held you prisoner — not anymore. And I know it doesn't feel like home, but maybe that can change too."
In his efforts to comfort Lapis, Steven reflects upon how everything changes. He's not wrong; from the seasons to our clothes, we are in a constant state of change. It's interesting that he also says that Lapis's notion of home can also change. Think about how many of us feel as though we are fish out of water and that the places we are in don't always feel like home, Steven's quote reminds us that home is a subjective idea and that Lapis may one day look around and feel as though she is home.
11. Episode: 'Steven's Dream'
Greg: "Rose and I talked about tons of important stuff. Music, comic books, getting sand between your toes, y'know, feelings. We both made a lot of mistakes when we were young. I thought disco was coming back, she started a war — I think she felt like she needed to confess everything to me, but I told her, 'The past is the past. All that matters to me is who you are now.' And who she was, was an incredible, loving being."
Steven has never known his mother, Rose Quartz, beyond the little that Greg has told him. Although Steven knows that she was the leader of the Crystal Gems and that, as a result of her genetics, he's got some of her powers (or, at the very least, adaptations of her powers), he doesn't know much about the kind of person she was.
For a kid's cartoon to delve into how a child might feel about the mother he never knew is heavy, but Greg's words to his son are a reminder that parents can do a great deal to ease a child's heavy heart when it comes to grief. Greg's words may have worked in the short term, but what the audience comes to realize is that Steven still has a lot to process when it comes to Rose Quartz.
12. Episode: 'Steven's Dream'
Steven: "I'm sick of everyone lying to me! Rose is my mom! Out of anyone! Don't I deserve to know the truth?!"
When it comes to those who are gone from us, it's sometimes hard to forget that those who are left behind need to and deserve to know the truth of their lives. Steven clearly felt this keenly, and while he is still a young boy, it's clear that he no longer wants the emotional protection of the Crystal Gems from the decisions his mother made when she was still alive. Perhaps by pushing for the truth, he feels he will come to understand his mother better? That remains unclear, but it would be a step in the right direction for the young man.
The Ongoing Tales Of Steven Universe
There will be more episodes of this popular television show to come, as the series is apparently renewed for a fifth season. However, there is a possibility that this could be a wrap for Steven Universe. Creator #RebeccaSugar says that she's going to shoot "for the moon — [she's] going to write us into a serious corner!"
What is certain is that Cartoon Network has discovered a definite gem in the world of Steven Universe, and while the episodes are only about 10 minutes each, they are little gold mines of humanity that we can all relate to.
