Keanu Reeves has been a fixture in popular culture for over 20 years. With such roles as Johnny Utah, John Constantine, John Wick and Johnny Mnemonic, he has certainly cornered the market on characters named John. His role as Neo in the Matrix is arguably one of the most significant roles of his career — but there's one role that's arguably even more iconic, and that fans still can't get enough of.
Of course, I'm talking about the role that typecast Reeves for almost 10 years: Ted “Theodore” Logan in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Ted is one of Reeves’s most beloved characters, but with Keanu in his 50s, fans weren’t sure if we would ever see him reprise the role. Hold on to your butts, because it looks like Bill & Ted are making a comeback — and Keanu is on board.
Keanu Reeves Talks Bill & Ted 3 On The Graham Norton Show
While promoting his new film John Wick 2, Keanu Reeves stopped by The Graham Norton Show, and the titular host steered the conversation toward the topic of #BillAndTed3. Reeves revealed that there is movement on the long-awaited sequel, in typically concise fashion:
The writers have a story, and we're trying to make it.
Reeves went on to describe the potential plot of Bill & Ted 3 in some detail, and it sounds like the perfect follow up to Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. The film would follow Bill & Ted in their 50s, as they try to cope with their families and continuing their journey as the world's saviors. The main plot will focus on the song that is supposed to save the world — which they haven't written yet — and due to their procrastination, the whole universe is in danger now. A person will then come from the future and try to get Bill & Ted back on the right track.

As with most sequels, the film will up the stakes from the previous two installments, while also following the same formula that fans have come to love. #KeanuReeves tops off his description of Bill & Ted 3 by attempting to get back into character, but he fails in the most adorable way. With Bill & Ted 3 on the way, we must ask ourselves: do we really want a continuation of the Bill & Ted saga, or is it too late to salvage the franchise?
Is It Too Late For A Bill & Ted 3?
We’ve seen sequels over the last few years that came out way after the films that preceded them. Dumb and Dumber 2, Zoolander 2, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day all came far too late, and were huge disappointments for fans.
The Bill & Ted franchise may be one of those rare franchise where revisiting the property decades later could actually work. The Bill & Ted films are as popular now than they were when they came out. The fans have kept the films alive over the years, and have a deeper appreciation for the film and its characters.
Unlike the aforementioned garbage fires, Bill & Ted 3 could actually benefit from the time gap between films. After Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, there was nowhere the story could go without it getting stale. The passage of time has opened the possibility for a more interesting story, while also staying true to the characters. The concept that Bill & Ted’s procrastination has put the universe in danger is genius, and could be a really fun film.
Fans Want More Bill & Ted
The most important factor in making a Bill & Ted 3 is whether or not the fans want to see it — if fans don’t want to see it, there's very little point in making a sequel. Luckily, the demand for Bill & Ted 3 is overwhelming, if Twitter is anything to go by.
There are literally hundreds of tweets with similar sentiments, and some are from years ago. When you look at the plot for Bill & Ted 3, Keanu Reeve’s excitement for the project, and the overwhelming fan approval, you have the makings for something truly special. To answer my titular question: it is never too late for a Bill & Ted 3, and I hope it’s everything we know it can be. While you’re waiting for Bill & Ted 3, you can catch Keanu Reeves in John Wick 2 in a theater near you.
