Due to the time-traveling nature of the show, DC's Legends Of Tomorrow is no stranger to introducing historical figures. And it looks like Season 3 will be continuing that tradition as Billy Zane has been cast in the show as P.T. Barnum — the politician, showman and businessman erroneously credited with coining the phrase "there's a sucker born every minute."
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the executive producer of Legends, Phil Klemmer, shed some light Zane's upcoming role, and what we can expect to see from the character. He commented:
"I’ve wanted to bring Billy onto 'Legends' ever since I saw him in a friend’s comedy pilot. I’m not sure that people know how funny Billy is, although we cast him as P.T. Barnum because we knew that he would be able to find the soul beneath the larger-than-life showman. Truth is, Barnum never said ‘there’s a sucker born every minute.’ He was less a conman, more the father of modern advertising. A guy who made things ‘go viral’ before that was a thing. Sure, in one sense, he’s the villain of our story, but in another, he’s just a guy who wants to put on a good show. Anyone who works in TV can relate to that, right?! Anyway, Billy seemed like the perfect guy to get that duality.
“The thing about history books is that they turn famous people into 2-D characters. This season on 'Legends', we want to meet other famous figures from history, people like Barnum, people we think we know, so that we can find the aspects of them, the parts of their story, that the history books left out — we want to bring history to life by infusing it with heart, humor, and total absurdity (often at the same time).”
Klemmer's confirmation that Barnum will indeed be the villain of their story could certainly lead to some interesting storylines, especially since we have seen the Legends come across some notoriously villainous historical figures before. Furthermore, Zane is no stranger to portraying villainous roles — who could forget his performance as Caledon Hockley in Titanic?
A Reunion Of Titanic Proportions
Of course, the greatest thing about Zane's appearance on Legends Of Tomorrow is that it will reunite him with his Titanic co-star Victor Garber. Garber, who portrays Professor Martin Stein on Legends, is also well known for his role as Thomas Andrews in the 1997 film.
As Klemmer also referenced the fact that both of the veteran actors had worked together before, you can rest assured that we will see Stein and Barnum interact at some point. And that will definitely be an awesome little nod to James Cameron's epic film.
Zane's arrival on DC's Legends Of Tomorrow will surely have interesting consequences for the Legends, and it raises a number of important questions about Season 3 — particularly surrounding his character's mysterious role. But with the actor well-accustomed to portraying the bad guy, we have to wonder: will P.T. Barnum sink the Legends' ship?
