Ever since his first appearance in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, Boba Fett has proven to be one of #StarWars' most popular characters, thanks to his cool character design and... well, that's pretty much it. Nothing if not enigmatic — the character barely has 5 lines in the Original Trilogy before bellyflopping into the Sarlacc Pit — Boba Fett's mysterious backstory has been the subject of a many a fan theory, and thanks to his popularity a solo movie based on the bounty hunter seemed inevitable. Now, that solo movie is looking far more likely.
My Entertainment World, a resource for people in the entertainment industry, recently listed the shelved Boba Fett movie as in development — and according to the website, this will be an origin story.
Unfortunately, the page is not available to non-subscribers, but Omega Underground (a Star Wars fansite) reported the new summary.
An origin story of the galaxy’s most notorious bounty hunter. Boba Fett is a Mandalorian warrior who was trained by his father-figure Jango Fett and became a notorious bounty hunter throughout the galaxy.
As fans will remember, the prequel movie Attack of the Clones revealed Boba Fett to be the clone of Jango Fett, who provided the genetic material needed for Palpatine's clone army. Brought up by Jango, Boba was left alone in the galaxy when his father was killed, and it seems as though the new movie will tell the story of how this young boy grew up to became the fearsome bounty hunter we know and love.
The now non-canon Expanded Universe (a.k.a. those super nerdy Star Wars books and comics you never got around to actually reading) gave Boba Fett a detailed backstory, as well as bringing the character back from the dead — because no-one is ever really dead in scifi, especially if they're a fan favorite with unlimited marketing opportunities.
However, all Fetts are off now — with the EU declared mere Legends by Disney, the Lucasfilm story group have the whole galaxy to play in when it comes to creating a new plotline for Boba Fett. But they may have something to build on already, as Fantastic Four director Josh Trank was originally working on the Boba Fett movie. After he left the project, it's impossible to know how much of his original story will be incorporated into the final film.
Before you start prepping that Boba Fett cosplay, it's worth noting that while My Entertainment World is a known source, Lucasfilm has yet to confirm or deny that this movie is in development. But considering they already hired Josh Trank to direct — not to mention all those Boba Fett action figures are just itching to be sold — it seems highly likely that the Boba Fett movie will follow #HanSolo in becoming to second of what is bound to be many origin stories based around popular characters.
Personally, I'm holding out hope for Lumpy.
