When Paramount announced that a Transformers spinoff would be happening, starring fan-favorite character , it took almost everyone by surprise. However, the studio has been dropping a lot of news lately — and it's making fans think the movie could actually turn out great.

It started with the announcement that WWE Superstar John Cena would be leading the cast. Now set photos have revealed something that many old-school Transformers fans will recognize:

Most fans will see the above photo and remember it as the classic yellow Volkswagen that Bumblebee transformed into — way back in the old-school Transformers cartoon series.

It seemed as if we would never actually see this rendition of the character, as back in the first first live-action Transformers, Bumblebee transformed into a vintage Camaro instead. However, eagle-eyed viewers would have also noticed the same yellow Volkswagen in a scene from that movie.

As of right now, the best possible way for the Volkswagen to appear is hinted at in the movie's synopsis:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.

The 1980s setting opens up a brand new door of possibilities for the Transformers universe, giving viewers insight into what the Autobots were up to before the events of the Transformers movies.

With this brand new breath of fresh air for the Bumblebee movie, there is hope that it could be better than the previous few Transformers movies. Bumblebee is still one of the most popular Transformers characters to date, so there is no doubt that when it hits theaters, this movie will receive a decent audience.

The Bumblebee movie will drive into theaters on December 21, 2018
