Captain Cold is making a triumphant return to not as an ally, but as a foe. It was revealed that Leonard Snart will make his reappearance on the midseason finale of DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Wait — Captain Cold died last season while saving the universe — how can he still be alive?

What Happened To Captain Cold?

Last season, Captain Cold heroically sacrificed himself to save his team members from certain death. Let me give you a brief recap of what happened:

Kendra and Scythian are turned over to Savage as he returns to 2166, when he kills Rip's family again. Sara and Snart, who evaded capture, make plans to rescue the team with the help of Gideon. Druce explains to Rip that the Time Masters helped Savage because an alien race from the planet Thanagar will attack Earth in 2175 and only Savage is able to unite the world and stop them. Druce also reveals the Oculus, which the Time Masters used to manipulate Rip's team (among various others) to facilitate Savage's rise to power, including orchestrating the murder of Rip's family. Snart and Sara disable the other time ships and rescue the others. The team decides to destroy the Oculus, only to find Druce waiting for them with soldiers. Having recruited Martin's 2016 self to help him, Jefferson returns in the jump ship and evens the odds. However, the success of the Oculus' self-destruct costs Snart his life, who takes Druce out with him. Savage learns of the unpredictability of the timeline due to the destruction of the Oculus and decides to make use of the time traveling technology at his disposal.

How Can Captain Cold Still Be Alive?

During most of Season 1, Captain Cold was in doubt about his role in the world and whether or not he was evil. When the time came, he made the right choice. How will the show explain how Snart came back to life or never truly died? There are several theories that I can come up with:

1. Leonard Snart never really died but was saved at the last second by the Waverider right before the explosion. Think about it: We never saw the body. All we saw was a bright white light and that was it. Generally in comics, no body means that the person could well be alive.

2. At the end of last season's finale, there was a Leonard Snart from an earlier point in time — before the events of DC Legends of Tomorrow. Rip Hunter told Snart's BFF Mick Rory/Heat Wave that if he wanted, he could come back to this moment in time whenever he wanted. Could it be that Snart who will show up?

3. Perhaps we will be introduced to a completely new version of Leonard Snart, one who was picked up by through time travel.

What About Heat Wave?

"You're the best guy I ever knew. You may not think you're a hero, but you're a hero to me." —Mick to Leonard Snart after his apparent death
"You're the best guy I ever knew. You may not think you're a hero, but you're a hero to me." —Mick to Leonard Snart after his apparent death

Another question I have is: How will Mick Rory react when he sees his old buddy alive and well? Mick is in a pretty dark spot at the moment and still dealing with the loss of his friend.

While I think Mick will be over the moon to see his old friend, I think he will be disappointed to find out that Snart has joined and returned to his old ways. While Mick still has criminal tendencies — such as stealing gold artifacts from eras visited while on missions with the Waverider — he ultimately fights for the right cause.

It would be fun to see a reverse of last season's happenings where Snart was turning into the man who was trying to the right thing over his old criminal ways and Mick trying to hold on the criminal life they led.

How do you predict DC's Legends of Tomorrow will bring back Captain Cold this season?
