One of the biggest announcements at Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con 2017 panel was that Captain Marvel will be set in the early 1990s, will explore the Kree-Skrull War from the comics, and it will feature a young Nick Fury.

With the film set before the events of 2008’s Iron Man, could any other familiar faces return? The Avengers hadn't yet been assembled — Captain America was still on ice, Tony Stark was just a college kid, and Spider-Man hadn't even been born — but here are key characters who can and should make a comeback as their younger selves:

Phil Coulson

Perhaps Coulson wasn't yet a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the early '90s and was still serving in the U.S. military, as he's mentioned on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It would be nice to finally see Coulson back on the silver screen, not just the TV screen. Captain Marvel could even show us how he came to join Nick Fury's secretive organization.

Captain America: Civil War opens in 1991 with the Winter Soldier in Siberia. We later discover that he killed Tony Stark’s parents that same year. So, we know that he was in the U.S. during the timeframe of Captain Marvel. We are talking about Marvel Studios, so he could definitely stop by for some yummy '90s plums.

Hank Pym & Peggy Carter

The opening scene of Ant-Man opens in 1989 shows Hank Pym — a CGI de-aged Michael Douglas — resigning from S.H.I.E.L.D. Although Pym technically retired from superheroing, a small cameo from Michael Douglas in Captain Marvel would be great. We also see Peggy Carter, then a high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, so a Peggy Carter role in Captain Marvel would make perfect sense.

Ronan The Accuser

Last time we saw Ronan he was disintegrated by the Guardians of the Galaxy. After Lee Pace's incredible performance as the Kree general, it's about time we got him back in action. With the Kree-Skrull War being adapted for Captain Marvel, it's only logical that Ronan the Accuser would be leading the Kree in a time of war.

Korath The Pursuer

Ronan's right hand man and a crucial member of the Kree, Korath the Pursuer was played by renowned actor Djimon Hounsou. Korath met his end in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 when Drax () killed him. Korath's return in Captain Marvel would give us more of his backstory and bring Hounsou back to the MCU. The actor's limited appearance in the franchise so far left many fans wanting more.

Ho Yinsen

Ho Yinsen (Shaun Toub) is one of the MCU's most important supporting characters, as he helped Tony Stark build the first Iron Man suit (and saved his life by plugging Stark's heart to a car battery) in Iron Man. Yinsen is an extremely intelligent engineer, and I'm sure that Marvel Studios could figure out a way to connect him to Captain Marvel's story.

Yondu

The galaxy's most awesome dad, Yondu () unfortunately met his end when he sacrificed himself to save Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Though Ego the Living Planet was Star-Lord's biological father, Yondu was the one who raised a young Peter Quill. It's been rumored that Yondu will return in an Avengers: Infinity War flashback, but he could definitely make a comeback in Captain Marvel. His former group, the Ravagers, deal with all kinds of aliens in the galaxy, so there's no question they've probably met the Skrulls in the past.

Can you think of any other MCU characters who were active in the '90s and could fit into Captain Marvel? Let me know in the comments below!
