Known for his roles in The Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters and Driving Miss Daisy, as well as his recurring spot on Saturday Night Live, Dan Aykroyd is a well known name in Hollywood — but people often forget that for a while, he was also Carrie Fisher's fiancé.
Breaking the silence since her untimely death on December 27 due to complications following a heart attack onboard a fight to L.A., Dan has made an emotional tribute to his late ex-fianceé and friend — which includes details of their wild 3-day LSD binges and how he earned the nickname 'Tuna Neck.'
Carrie & Dan Played Opposite Each Other In Blues Brothers
In Thursday's edition of Empire, Dan wore his heart on his sleeve and discussed his relationship with Carrie from when they first met on the set of Saturday Night Live all the way to their breakup, and Carrie's engagement to Paul Simon. After their initial meeting on SNL, Carrie was given a role in Blues Brothers alongside John Belushi and Dan, and it was while they were shooting the movie that Dan and Carrie fell in love. From here she moved him, in true Carrie style:
“into a penthouse suite in the futuristic, aluminium-clad Astro Tower, which I knew to apologize for. Carrie had the most refined eye for art and design.”
Then They Got Blood Tests To See How Compatible They Were
Yes, this is actually something that happened. While the couple were in Chicago, Dan and Carrie sent their blood off to an "East Indian female doctor" to see how compatible the pair were, and from the results — he proposed to her by giving her a sapphire ring. Talking about what a joy it was to have met Carrie, Dan stated:
“I grew up as a simple Catholic kid from a government family in Hull, Quebec, so you can imagine how much of a privilege and honor it was for me to have known this one-off, broke-the-mould woman as a great friend.”
But Carrie Responded To The Proposal In A Very, Very Unique Way
Of course, being Carrie Fisher, she couldn't just accept Dan's proposal with a simple 'Yes!' Instead, Carrie presented her fiancé with a very unusual gift of:
“a Donald Roller Wilson oil painting of a monkey in a blue dress next to a tiny floating pencil.”
Dan kept the painting for many years and only got rid of it because it struck terror into the hearts of his children. Another keepsake Dan has of his time spent engaged to Carrie Fisher is his charming nickname "Tuna Neck" after Carrie turned to Dan and said:
“You have a jawline, hold your chin up otherwise you look like a tuna.”
The Couple Spent Three Days In Reno Weeping To Christmas Songs While High On LSD
Proving that the couple who get high together, may not stay together, but they get the best #lol stories, Dan discussed the time that he and Carrie managed to get hold of some "original Owsley" (the first person to manufacture LSD) acid tabs, flew up to Reno, rented a wagon and:
“ checked in for three days of full-on weeping to Christmas classics.”
However, amidst the sobbing and the festive cheer, Dan was quick to point out that:
"At this point our love was soaring on laugh-filled exhilaration and a vibrant, wholly satisfying physical intimacy."
However, Their Love Was Not To Last As Carrie Married Paul Simon
After breaking up in Martha's Vineyard due to Carrie being in love with Paul Simon, Dan still remained fond of her, stating that even though she did end up marrying someone else:
"I hope she kept my ring."
