Sometimes, we get a glimpse into the life of a #celebrity and discover that they’re just like us. Maybe they also enjoy the simple things in life, like dancing, midnight snacks and sitting at home alone in their pajamas on a Friday night. And maybe they enjoy publicly declaring their somewhat creepy adoration of other celebrities over social media out of the blue with absolutely no context. But that just makes them more human, right? Or just creepy, depending on your views.
If you haven’t been keeping up with (the actor formerly known as) Batman, The Saint, Madmartigan, #ValKilmer, he recently took to his Twitter to express his admiration for (the pretty amazing) #CateBlanchett. These tweets (for some reason) included a close-up selfie and were interspersed between retweets of Mark Twain quotes and a visit to the World Trade Center.
He’s since deleted other Cate-loving quotes, including my ever-so-strange favorites:
And this one, which was the caption for a black-and-white photo of Cate:
He’s since copped quite a bit of flak from Twitter users and news outlets (but praise from Complex), yet he doesn’t seem all too bothered by it. And he’s not the only one — just check out some of the other big names who've acted similarly on social media.
4. Donald Trump
We all now the President is no stranger to controversy or numerous foot-in-mouth moments, like this one:
Which is why it’s never a surprise when his past actions are brought into the spotlight, like his obsession with #KristenStewart’s relationship with her then-boyfriend and #Twilight co-star, #RobertPattinson. As a thrice-divorced man and alleged cheater himself, his consistent tweets (11!) of advice for the couple seemed a little ham-fisted.
Stewart later addressed these tweets in her opening monologue on SNL four years later and made a pretty solid point: Maybe Trump wasn’t obsessed with her; maybe he was obsessed with Robert.
He also tweeted about #KatyPerry and her then-husband #RussellBrand in a similar fashion, clearly relishing in sticking his nose into the relationships of young, attractive couples like an unwanted Dr. Phil.
Finally, in another overly-creepy instance, he felt the need to add his two cents into the mix when topless sunbathing photos of #KateMiddleton, Duchess of Cambridge, emerged.
A man with a fascination for the private affairs of attractive women more than half his age. In the words of Mr. President: “SAD!”
3. Jim Carrey
From the man who gifted us The Truman Show, but who also threw Dumb and Dumber To at us, comes a slightly-too-up-close, slightly-too-serious declaration of love for the pretty lovable #EmmaStone.
In the video, Carrey gets pretty specific about how he imagines their future together would be like, like the below excerpt, which jumps from zero to 100:
"I just wanted to let you know that I think you’re all the way beautiful. Not just pretty, but, you know, smart and kindhearted. And if I were a lot younger, I would marry you, and we would have chubby little freckled faced kids. We’d laugh all day long and go camping and play Yahtzee and tell ghost stories by the fire. And the sex?
Not one to break the act, Carrey followed the video up with tweets explaining that he wasn’t joking. Though we can take comfort in the fact that it was all a means of driving traffic to his now-defunct website, www.jimcarreytrulife.com.
At least Emma was “flattered," right?
2. Hulk Hogan
Look, I get it. Some celebrities can be quite narcissistic. Sometimes this narcissism gets projected onto their offspring and they can’t help but declare their amazement at just have attractive this person who shares half of their DNA is. Just ask Trump.
But this time it’s #HulkHogan, who decided back in 2013 that it would be appropriate and totally not creepy to post a photo of his daughter, Brooke, with the caption "Brooke’s legs."
But people weren’t so much looking at Brooke’s legs as they were looking at Hulk in confusion and disgust.
Brooke come to his defense though, (again) tweeting:
A dad can't even be proud of his daughter without sickos makin' it something it's not. Really?? Go back to your farm animals. #ignorant
1. Aaron Carter
Back in the days of early-2000s sugary pop, there reigned a couple so blonde and sweet that you could almost make out the word "PURE" etched into both of their foreheads. #AaronCarter and #HilaryDuff were a pre-teen dream, until Aaron left Hilary for #LindsayLohan (remember their feud?) and then later cheated on her after they reunited.
And while we never forget our first love, it may have been beneficial to Carter’s emotional health back in 2014 if he had managed to let go of their past love and move on.
While he may have still been holding a torch for Duff back then, she made it clear that the feelings were not mutual when asked how she felt about his love declarations:
"I was not expecting this question. He does, I keep seeing that, that he keeps doing that. I don't know how I feel. I mean, that was so long ago, and obviously I'm still married, and I have a baby and we kind of just … don't know each other … so … yeah."
He later insisted that Duff stop discussing him in the media, even though she was only responding to his actions. Ah, young love.
