Most people believe that in our world, there is more that lies beneath the surface of our mundane, physical realm. Indeed, ever since the dawn of humanity, beliefs in the supernatural have captivated, and haunted people, in equal measure.

These days, our fascination with ghosts hasn't withered away and all across the globe, you can find thousands of people who continue to experience encounters with the paranormal first-hand. Hollywood's finest are no exception.

Here are 16 examples of celebrities who have seen ghosts and were brave enough to talk about it:

1. Kate Hudson

Yep, apparently Kate Hudson and her mom Goldie Hawn have some kind of weird, sixth sense and are totally able to see ghosts. According to the actress:

“It is not really seeing, it is feeling a spirit. A fifth energy. I believe in energy. I believe our brains can manifest into visual things.”

Admittedly, the above doesn't actually reveal much. Yet, don't be fooled by the wishy-washy spirit speak — Hudson does in fact want everyone to know that she seems to encounter ghosts as regularly as she does the milk man. Here's the proof:

"I've seen ghosts plenty of times. I've seen a ghost of a woman with no face, and that was really creepy. Another time. my grandmother came to me and I woke up and felt amazing that she was around me."

Thank goodness she's never had to experience the supernatural shit storm that was The Skeleton Key IRL, though:

2. Cher

In a Reddit AMA, Cher revealed that she is certainly one to 'Believe':

"I love ghosts. I actually think that Sonny makes a light go on. I have a beautiful chandelier that he makes the light go on when it is impossible, there is no power on. I love ghosts, I prefer ghosts to some people."

Bit weird Cher, but you do you.

3. Gillian Anderson

Actress Gillian Anderson came face-to-face with countless supernatural and sci-fi beings while on The X-Files and it seems that similar encounters have spilled over into her real life. In the past, she's admitted in a Reddit AMA:

"I've definitely felt other spirits. I'm quite sensitive to it. And yes. But it's not something you can really talk about with too many people, especially not me."

Tell us more Gillian, tell us more!

4. Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey may have once been in a movie called Ghosts of Girlfriends Past but there was absolutely nothing romantic about his encounter with a real paranormal entity a few years back.

When he moved into his Hollywood home, the actor admits to having been visited by a ghost of an older woman he named "Madame Blue." Apparently, there was a strange noise in the house and he happened to be stark naked (of course) when he went to investigate the ruckus. Luckily though, he said the entity wasn't malicious:

"She has no qualms with me. We get along just fine. She's a cool ghost. Maybe me being nude all the time is why we get along!"

5. Megan Fox

Megan Fox has been pretty vocal about her beliefs in a wide-range of bizarre things over the years — UFOs, Big Foot, leprechauns and disembodied people being particularly notable candidates. In fact, the actress has actually admitted herself that she believes "in everything" in an unwavering warpath to accept all the weird shit people think actually exist all over the world.

Ghosts, of course, are no exception. On a more serious note, here's an account of a ghostly encounter, straight from the horse's perfectly pouted mouth:

"I've heard ghosts. I was just in Mexico at my hotel [. . .] and at 7 am — I had pre-ordered breakfast for 7:30 am — I heard them come in with the little table, I heard them pouring coffee and I thought 'Ugh, I'm not going to get up for another 30 minutes and my coffee is going to be cold. That sucks.' So I get up 30 minutes later, no coffee, no table, no nothing. I heard the doorbell ring, I answer the door, it's room service with my food, they bring it in. I turn around and all the bedroom lights are on and I'm like, you know what, I'm delirious, I've been traveling, drink your coffee. Brandy the nanny comes in later and she's like, 'Why did room service come in at 7 when we told them to come in at 7:30?' So you can't tell me I'm crazy because two people heard it."

No Meg, you're definitely not off your rocker at all.

6. Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba once recalled this creepy experience in her teenage years:

"I had no idea what it was. I felt this pressure and I couldn't get up, I couldn't scream, I couldn't talk, I couldn't do anything. Something definitely took the covers off me and I definitely couldn't get off the bed, and then, once I did, I screamed, ran to my parents' room and I don't think I spent many nights in that house ever again! There was definitely something in my parents' old house — I don't know what it was. I can't really explain it. But they got it blessed and they burned sage and stuff since then."

Oh, and then there was that time she took this selfie...

Yep, make of that what you will.

7. Emma Stone

Emma Stone has also had an encounter with ghosts, yet this supernatural presence is far closer to her heart.

"My grandfather leaves quarters. It's amazing, it's absolutely him. That's the joy of it, it's not a logical thing, it's magical."

8. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus's account with a spooky presence is legit terrifying. In an interview with Elle UK, the little lady spoke about some rather unsettling goings on in the London apartment she was renting during the European leg of her recent tour. This is what she had to say:

"It was seriously so terrifying. One night, my little sister — it sounds crazy to tell you — but she was standing in the shower and all of a sudden, I hear her scream. I run in there and the water had somehow flipped to hot but it was still . . . It wasn’t like the water had just changed, the knob had turned but she hadn't turned it and it was burning her. She was really red."

And that wasn't the end of her troubles. Another time in the haunted dwelling, Miley came face to face with an actual physical manifestation:

"I thought I had seen a little boy sitting on the sink watching me take a shower so I felt really freaked out. I was sitting there the next night and maybe I'm crazy, but I could have sworn I could see this little boy sitting there on the sink, kicking his feet. We found out that there was this older man that owned it [the bakery] and his son lived with him there, and I guess the wife died or something, she had gotten sick. So it was just the son and the dad that lived there in the bakery, and then the dad died and the son took over the bakery, and I thought I was seeing the son. I'm not even kidding. I had to move. That's not a lie. I will never stay there ever again."

I wouldn't either, tbh.

9. Carrie Fisher

Carrie Fisher is many things — she's a prolific Twitterer with a vibrant penchant for emojis, a proud mama to super pup Gary and believe it or not, another high-profile celebrity who has seen ghosts. For years now, the Star Wars actress has been adamant that her home in Beverly Hills is haunted by R. Gregory Stevens, a Republican strategist and friend who took an overdose in the house back in 2005 and died in her bed. And as for how she knows this, Carrie had this to say to Vanity Fair:

"Lights would go on and off, and I had this toy machine, that when you touched it would say, 'F*ck you! Eat sh*t! You're an *sshole!' And it would go off in the night, by itself, in my closet. I was a nut for a year, and in that year I took drugs again."

Following a series of encounters, the actress's friends in called in an exorcist:

"After that, things were fine. But you know, he didn't just die in his sleep, he died in mine. So it's still not gone, and I don't think it will ever be."

I suggest moving house, Carrie.

10. Keanu Reeves

Actor Keanu Reeves has revealed that when he was 6 or 7-years-old, he saw something that he simply couldn't explain. He was hanging out at his family's new apartment in New York when:

"All of a sudden we are looking at [the doorway] and this jacket comes waving through the doorway. Just an empty jacket, there's no head, there's no body, there's no legs, it's just there and then it disappears. And I was a little kid so I was like, 'OK well that's interesting.'"

The next time he collided with a ghost was more than merely baffling. This is what he recalls when he was living in New Jersey as a young boy:

"I remember just staring at this suit, which has no body or legs in it as it came into the room before disappearing. It was a double-breasted suit in white, and I looked at my nanny, who was just as shocked as me. I just couldn't get back to sleep afterwards, and I still see the figure in my dreams and nightmares."

11. Alyson Hannigan

Like Gillian Anderson, Alyson Hannigan got her fair share of scares as Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yet, nothing could prepare the actress for what would be waiting for her when she moved into a new home in LA with her husband. In an interview back in 2003, Hannigan said the following:

"I have a ghost in my house. My friend saw him first one night. She said, 'I don't mean to alarm you, but I just saw a man follow us out of the house.' And I said, 'Well, at least he's gentlemanly, he let us go first."

Wow, if only more ghosts were so polite.

12. Demi Lovato

Former Disney sweetheart is another celebrity who totally believes that there's more beneath the surface of our physical world. Writing for Buzzfeed, the star once admitted:

"I go ghost hunting. My house in Texas is so ridiculously haunted. Not by a bad spirit, but a little girl. I think her name is Emily. I’ve had a medium come over and ghost hunters, and they both told me the same name, Emily. There were so many times that I saw her when I was growing up. I saw her in my closet one time. When I was 3 years old my mom caught me talking to something by myself. She asked, “Who are you talking to?” and I said, “My best friend Emily.” She’s playful. She’d probably be around 11 or 12 years old, maybe younger."

Sounds like the beginning of a horror movie, quite frankly.

13. Ke$ha

You better believe it because Ke$ha's song 'Supernatural' is 100 percent taken from personal experience. Speaking to Conan O'Brien a few years back, the singer revealed that things got pretty hot and heavy when she came face to face with a frisky paranormal entity one evening. Her actual words were:

"I did go to the bone zone with a ghost. Do you want details? I don’t know his name but he was in my house. He started caressing me. It was a sexy time, it wasn’t like sex."

"Bone zone" with a ghost? You really can't make this shit up. Here's the clip:

14. Ariana Grande

Speaking to Complex magazine, pop princess Ariana Grande also once recalled visiting one of the most terrifying spots on Earth, otherwise known as Stull Cemetery. Apparently, the spot is so troubling that even the Pope won't fly over it. Grande explained what happened to her in 2013:

"We wanted to go to Stull Cemetery, which is known as one of the seven gates to hell on Earth. I felt this sick, overwhelming feeling of negativity over the whole car and we smelled sulfur, which is the sign of a demon, and there was a fly in the car randomly, which is another sign of a demon. I was like, 'This is scary, let's leave.' I rolled down the window before we left and said, 'We apologize. We didn't mean to disrupt your peace.' Then I took a picture and there are three super distinct faces in the picture — they're faces of textbook demons."

And in case you were wondering what on earth happened to that picture, prepare to be disappointed:

"I deleted it. The next day I tried to send the picture to my manager and it said, “This file can’t be sent, it’s 666 megabytes.” I’m not kidding. I used to have a folder called “Demons” that had pictures with all the screencaps in it, but then weird things started happening to me so I deleted it."

15. Peter Jackson

Ok. this one is legit really scary. Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit director Peter Jackson has spoken out about something strange he encountered during the filming of the first movie in the series. Speaking to Stuff, he said:

"One night I woke up and there was a figure in the room. She was really scary - her face was like a silent scream. She glided across the room and disappeared into the wall."

The next day, Jackson told his wife about what he had seen and her response is enough to make your blood run cold:

"She said, 'Was it the woman with a screaming face?' We had never spoken about it."

Oh. My. God.

16. Melissa McCarthy

Way before she was actually cruisin' about scoutin' for ghosts in Ghostbusters, Melissa McCarthy was actually colliding with them on the regular in real life. Speaking to US Weekly, she's admitted:

"I do believe in ghosts. I lived in a house in Boulder, Colorado, that every time you walked up there, everyone who walked up there said, ‘Oh, I don’t like this.’ There was just a presence.”

Have you ever seen a real ghost?
