The summer movie season is almost upon us and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is right around the corner. With a release date of May 5, 2017, GotGVol.2 has fans excited with a return to humor, action and a kick-ass soundtrack. But with all this going on, let's not forget that the film still has a few surprise roles, too.
“We do have a couple of characters who are very important to the Marvel Universe who are going to make their debut in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,' which people don't know about ... Sylvester Stallone plays one of these characters...my friend Michael Rosenbaum also has a pretty decent role in the movie as well and it sort of works in tandem with Sly's character." — James Gunn

One thing that we don't know what to expect is the character played by #SylvesterStallone. His entry on IMDb is noticeably blank, as is Michael Rosenbaum's. #JamesGunn has been uncharacteristically silent given that he revealed #Ego was #StarLord's father quite some time ago. His only comment is that Stallone is great (duh) and that he plays a significant cosmic role. So, let's take a look at who he could potentially be playing:
1. Star Fox
Star Fox is a cosmic character with ties to the greater #MCU. He is a titan and brother to #Thanos. Given the name of Eros by his father, Mentor, Star Fox has the ability to "excite" the pleasure centers of other beings. He spent some time on Earth, even serving as an Avenger. As I speculated with #KurtRussell playing the character, Star Fox is an integral part of the cosmic part of the MCU and will show up eventually. As a sibling to Thanos, he may play a key role for the Guardians of the Galaxy as well as #AvengersInfinityWar.
Wendell Vaughn possesses quantum bands fused to his wrists, where they draw their power from the gems within them. Vaughn is from Earth and has also served time with the Avengers. Wendell is usually found in space dealing with cosmic threats, so it is not outside of the realm of imagination that he could appear in the film. As another person from Earth, he could relate well to Peter Quill and Stallone could pull off an aging #superhero.
As I stated in the last entry, Stallone isn't exactly a spring chicken. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Rocky Balboa, a character he originated in the '70s. This would make him the perfect age to play Mentor, Father of Eros, a.k.a. Star Fox, and, you guessed it, Thanos. Thanos is such a badass that one would expect him to come from tough stock. Who tougher than one of the originators of the classic action flick?
If Ego the living Planet is a bit of a stretch of the imagination for you, you should also know going in that he has a brother named Alter-Ego. Admittedly, this is bit of a wish list of mine as I would be getting my Tango and Cash reunion. James Gunn has already said that Stallone would be playing more of a comedic role as well as a character of significant cosmic importance. What better way than as a device to keep Kurt Russell in line?
5. The Champion
The Champion, also known as Tryco Slatterus, is an elder of the Universe. he tries to prove that he is the greatest fighter in existence but does so fairly. He has challenged the likes of the #Thing, the #Hulk, Doc Samson and #Thor. With Stallone playing Rocky Balboa, it would be a short walk to grasp him as the ultimate fighter in the universe and bring a bit of humor to boot.
In the end, we won't know Sly's role until it is announced. I'd imagine with a bit of buzz, we will more than likely know something sooner rather than later. Then there's still the bit about Michael Rosenbaum.
Who do you think Sly will end up playing?
