Charlie's Angels has had a huge impact on pop-culture. Ever since the original TV series — starring Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson — was released in 1976, people can't get enough of the resourceful private investigators. We've had two highly successful films starring Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz in the early 2000s, and even a new TV series in 2011 (which ultimately didn't take off).
Right now, #SonyPictures is hard at work on a reboot to present the characters to a modern audience. Last year, Elizabeth Banks joined the project as director. Since then, developments on the project have been scarce. Fortunately, things are picking back up. The Tracking Board is reporting that Sony has hired Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, creators of Netflix's hit crime drama, #Narcos, to rewrite the script for the new film.
What About The Angels?
That's the most important question here: who will be playing the agile agents? According to the report, Janelle Monae, better known for her roles in Hidden Figures and Moonlight (and for being a contender for the role of Domino in #Deadpool2) is Sony's top choice for one of the titular roles.
However, take this with a grain of salt because the script hasn't been written and therefore a casting process hasn't begun. With that said, Monae is an incredible actress, so the prospect of her starring is quite exciting.
It's also worth mentioning the possibility of #ElizabethBanks working two jobs in the film. She has been known to act as both director and performer in projects like her short film, Just A Little Heart Attack and #PitchPerfect2. Granted, she had a very small role in the latter, but Banks being a protagonist in Charlie's Angels probably isn't out of the question.
Sony is clearly going full-steam ahead with the development of this reboot, so you might be wondering when we'll get to see it. If you're a diehard Charlie's Angels fans, it looks like you won't have to wait long. Reportedly Sony is eyeing for a 2019 release.
I must say, if this reboot happens, with Elizabeth Banks at the helm, the creators of Narcos as writers and possibly Janelle Monae as a star, it could turn out to be something special.
