Anticpation was already high, but now the eager fans of Mamma Mia! have something extra amazing to look forward to: The Legend... The Icon... Academy Award-winning actress Cher has joined the ensemble cast for the upcoming musical sequel to the 2008 smash hit. The sequel titled, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, is set to hit theaters next summer.
No, this isn't a dream, Cher is returning to the big screen. After a sevenyear absence, The Witches Of Eastwick star is finally ready to jump back into the wild world of Hollywood. Even better, she's chosen this highly-anticipated musical as the first step to what some may hope is her triumphant return.
The cast, including returning stars #MerylStreep, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, and Julie Walters, will be joined, along with Cher and Andy Garcia, by Cinderella star Lilly James, who'll be playing the younger version of Streep's character, Donna Sheridan. They recently completed filming in Croatia, and will join Cher in London soon for further filming.
As of now, the scenes and musical numbers that Cher will be performing in the film are being kept under tight wraps. One producer close to the project said, "Cher is our secret weapon. It'll spoil the fun if we give anything away." The sequel has some pretty large boots to fill following the original, which took in over half a billion at the box office, but with Cher's captivating performance style and iconic vocals, fans of both the film and of the singer are definitely in for one helluva show.
With the added talent of one of America's most beloved superstars, audiences will certainly be having the time of their lives when this musical rolls into theaters in summer 2018.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is currently slated to hit theaters on July 18, 2018.
