Sharpen those claws and get ready for playtime, because Hollywood has just unloaded possibly its best idea since James Gunn decided to put David Hasselhoff on the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. Horror mashups are nothing new to the genre, and the likes of Alien vs Predator show just how financially successful a pairing of gory greats can be for the box office.

We saw the fruits of a similar labor when Freddy vs. Jason slashed a razor glove and a machete onto our screens in 2003, but was another horror icon due to enter our nightmares with the Springwood Slasher? Imagine a world where tiny terror Chucky takes on the dream demon that is Freddy Krueger — and then give me all your money!

The Stuff Of Nightmares

Transcribed by Bloody Disgusting, director Don Mancini spoke to the Necromicast podcast to unveil his ambitious plans for the grotesque Good Guy doll to crossover into the world of Elm Street in his very own When Chucky Met Freddy:

"My idea for the movie is to do it as a horror movie version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It’s called Child’s Play on Elm Street. Chucky ends up in the bedroom of a house on Elm Street. And Freddy meets him there. And they’re, like, fans of each other. So they have this rapport. But then they realize Elm Street isn’t big enough for the two of them. It only can contain one killer.”

There were always talks of a second FvJ or even Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, but to be honest, the Chucky idea sounds so much better. Sadly, it sounds like Mancini's idea will probably just remain just that and nothing more. You don't need a degree in horror lore to know that there would need to be a lot of borrowing and bargaining to unite the two popular psychopaths:

“I’ve talked about this a lot over the years and it’s actually an idea that I think is cool and doable. It’s just… it would require arranging all the legal red tape between two different studios. But I think Chucky versus Freddy would be awesome. Because they both have distinct personalities, and they both talk, they would be a really fun double act.

We have already seen Chucky rip his way out of the packaging and back into our hearts with 2013's Curse of Chucky, while the upcoming Cult of Chucky seems to continue the character's gleeful murder spree. Elsewhere, Elm Street remains largely derelict after Samuel Bayer's dire reboot of the series in 2010. Even though Jackie Earle Haley did a great job of tipping his fedora to the character of Freddy Krueger, it just wasn't right not having in that striped sweater.

With Englund always open to a Freddy return, and the franchise seemingly at a stalemate, teaming him with that delinquent doll could be the stab in the dark that the horror series needs. Part of Freddy vs. Jason that let it down was the fact that Freddy continued his usual chatterbox spiel, while Jason stoically stood there as a lumbering giant. With voicing Chucky, the character is known for his zippy one liners that could riff off Englund — it sounds like a match made in the heaven of hell.

Mancini has written all seven Child's Play films and directed the past three of them, so if anyone knows how to yank Chucky's pullstring, it is him. That being said, would New Line really be willing to hand over those substantial Elm Street reigns to such a lunatic idea? Well, it can't be any worse than Bayer's film, can it?
