George Clooney is one of Hollywood's best actors, and despite the fact that he hasn't starred in any films this year, that doesn't mean he hasn't been busy. The Ocean's 11 actor has had a lot going on in 2017 away from movies, like welcoming twins with his wife Amal Clooney.
But becoming parents isn't the only thing the Clooneys have been busy with. Earlier this week The Clooney Foundation pledged a $2.25 million partnership with UNICEF to help seven public schools to provide critical education opportunities to nearly 3,000 currently out-of-school refugee students this school year.
The Clooney Foundation was set up in 2016 and according to their website, their aim is to "advance justice in courtrooms, communities, and classrooms around the world." In a statement, George and Amal Clooney commented on the UNICEF partnership:
“Thousands of young Syrian refugees are at risk -- the risk of never being a productive part of society. Formal education can help change that. That’s our goal with this initiative. We don’t want to lose an entire generation because they had the bad luck of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time,”
George and Amal Clooney's contribution hasn't gone unnoticed, with Lebanon’s Minister of Education, Marwan Hamade graciously thanking the pair and their foundation for the generous aid:
"The Government of Lebanon is profoundly grateful to the leadership of George and Amal Clooney and the Clooney Foundation for Justice. We are delighted the Clooney Foundation has decided to support our efforts to open the doors of more public schools to ensure we can offer every child currently living in Lebanon a free education. We are also looking forward to collaborating with the Clooney Foundation and its partners on advancing innovative technology in all our classrooms. Each child given access to education, and new ways of learning, represents a life changed for the better. Today’s grant from the Clooney Foundation for Justice is therefore a crucial investment in future generations in Lebanon.”
The UNICEF website reiterates just how important this donation from the Clooney Foundation is, explaining just how severe the crisis in Lebanon is regarding fair education. Lebanon has the world’s highest per capita refugee population, which is largely due to the influx of Syrian refugees. This drastic increase in refugees means there's a strain on local resources for students and refugees in Lebanon. UNICEF were very vocal with their gratitude toward the Clooney Foundation's donation. In a statement released, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said:
“By supporting the work of UNICEF and our partners to deliver education to every child affected by the conflict in Syria, the Clooney Foundation for Justice is not only investing in the futures of individual children, it is investing in the future of the entire region. UNICEF is deeply grateful for this critical funding.”
Not The First Project By The Clooney Foundation
Although the Clooney Foundation was only established in 2016, it hasn't wasted any time in helping people in need. The first project the foundation undertook was also aimed at providing aid for refugees, helping those who were preparing to be resettled in the United States. As well as this, the foundation has the TrialWatch Project, which monitors, reports and responds to unfair trials where sometimes judges can swing their decision to the highest bidder. This often affects the 'crimes' of "homosexuality, blasphemy or apostasy" in countries where people aren't granted full rights.
It's quite immeasurable how sincere and generous these acts from George and Amal Clooney are, especially when you consider their organisation was only started last year! Hopefully more celebrities follow in the Clooney's footsteps of bettering the world around us.
Let me know what you think of George and Amal Clooney's excellent efforts to better the world!
