James Wan's #TheConjuring summoned some great and scary things — it introduced #Annabelle, who got her own spinoff film and will return in Lights Out director David F. Sandberg's Annabelle: Creation, coming this August
#TheConjuring2 struck gold as well with creepy characters like the Nun — and speaking of that terrifying demon, she's getting a spinoff as well, The Nun, with Corin Hardy set to direct, according to the Hollywood Reporter. #TheHatefulEight and #AlienCovenant actor Demian Bichir will star.
Hardy is no stranger to the horror genre. His breakout film, #TheHallow, slipped under the radar back in 2015, and combined great scares with phenomenal performances, especially from Bojana Novakovic (Devil, Drag Me To Hell). The film's dark atmosphere and its slow build are a joy for true horror fans. Check out the trailer below:
Little is known of The Nun’s story, but it will focus on Demian Bichir’s character investigating the death of a nun (possibly the one we all know and fear).
The story may dive into the origins of the demon and how it took form. Since it has ties with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s Ed and Lorrain Warren, the story could possibly feature the two actors reprising their roles in some capacity before heading into The (inevitable) Conjuring 3.
James Wan’s universe wouldn’t have worked without the Warrens, and a third Conjuring film would be so welcome. This cinematic universe could set the tone for future horror franchises looking to copy the #MCU formula, and that’s a good thing. If Annabelle: Creation and The Nun become hits like their predecessors, horror filmmakers will have something new up their sleeves.
