Without a doubt, Constantine's cancelation was one of the most unfortunate TV series losses in recent memory. The show, which followed the exploits of DC's demon hunter John Constantine, was well-received by critics and fans of the comics — but NBC pulled the plug due to low ratings.
However, the show's cancelation wasn't the end for the beloved character. Actor Matt Ryan ended up reprising the role in an episode of The CW's #Arrow, which saw the Green Arrow reach out to John Constantine to help him deal with the resurrection of White Canary, Sara Lance. The appearance went down well with fans, and undoubtedly stood out as one of the few great moments in Arrow's less-than-stellar fourth season.
Now, The CW has revived Constantine one more time, bringing the demon hunter back to star in his own animated series. And now, the network has unveiled the first poster of the brand new series. Check it out below:
Ryan will reprise his role, voicing the titular character in the new series. Moreover, it will be executive produced by David S. Goyer (who worked on the live-action series),#Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti and CW veteran Sarah Schechter.
The animated series is expected to arrive in early 2018, and it definitely sounds like it's going to be epic. Check out the synopsis below:
This all-new animated series from Warner Bros. Animation and Blue Ribbon Content follows DC’s popular comic book character John Constantine (voiced by the live action series star Matt Ryan), a seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult. Armed with an arcane knowledge of the dark arts and a wicked wit, he fights the good fight. With his soul already damned to hell, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. With the balance of good and evil on the line, Constantine uses his skills to face the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.
Will It Confirm The Original Series' Place In The Arrowverse?
While it will undoubtedly be great to have John Constantine (and Matt Ryan's voice) back on our screens, we have to wonder if this new series will serve as a sequel to NBC's live-action outing. And furthermore, will it take place in the Arrowverse?
Ryan's appearance as the character on Arrow certainly suggests that Constantine took place in the Arrowverse, but this was never actually confirmed. And since The CW's shows exist within the DC multiverse, Ryan could have easily been playing a doppelganger of the John Constantine from his universe.
However, the one factor that could tie everything together is the fact that the new animated series will air on The CW Seed — the same network as animated series Vixen. And by now, it's been well-established that Vixen does indeed take place in the Arrowverse. Thus, if the CW went to the effort to produce their own Constantine series (in the style of Vixen), it's highly likely that it will also take place in the Arrowverse.
So, if the writers do decide to pick up where the live-action series left off, they wouldn't just be revisiting that Gothic world, they would be confirming that it existed within the Arrowverse.
With The CW having such a major impact on the character in the post-Constantine era, it certainly feels like it would be a missed opportunity if they didn't continue the story from the beloved live-action series. But whether they do or not, it will be great to see Matt Ryan reprising the role one more time.
