It has been a long time coming, but Preacher could be the next hit show for AMC - joining the likes of Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead - after enlisting Superbad pair and , as well as Breaking Bad writer .
The choice of the pair, best known for their comedy roles, is a move that may surprise fans of the comic - which maintained a darker tone - though was not without moments of gallows humor, with lines like:
Son of God or son of man, Marseille: You can't fuck your sister and expect much good to come of it
The comic series ran in the 1990's from Vertigo comics. It told the story of Jesse Custer, a small town reverend who loses his faith before being possessed by a spirit called Genesis that is more powerful than God - and then decides it is down to him to take on the Man upstairs. In the course of his adventures he meets serial killers, militant religious fanatics, vampire man-whores, a kid named ‘Arseface’ and the Patron Saint of Murderers and Assassination.
Some have thought the material un-adaptable, a film version has been discussed - and HBO had a stab at it in 2008, but couldn't bring it together. The network ultimately denounced the comic as "too dark and too violent and too controversial".
But what do you think? Are Rogen and Goldberg the right fit? And what about Preacher itself - expect much good to come of it?
