Academy Award-winning director is all set up to helm a feature adaptation of the 2013 British documentary Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers.
Recently released this summer, the heist documentary focuses on one of the most successful criminal rings specialized on high-grade diamond theft, the 'Pink Panthers.' Using surveillance footage from the real-life heists, as well as several interviews with crime experts and even anonymous ones with people claiming to be members of the gang.
This wouldn't be the first time Boyle forays into the heist genre, as he recently sat on the director's chair for his most recent work, Trance (which dealt with the heist of a famous painting).
Financing for the project will stem from Pathe and Fox Searchlight, who are co-financing with Cloud Eight Films (headed by longtime Boyle-collaborator Christian Colson). Distribution will be managed by Boyle's long-time partner Searchlight, which has managed most of the films throughout his career.
