There was a time when acting was considered an ignoble profession; home to hammy soap-opera actors and one-dimensional sitcom characters. If you wanted to be considered a serious thespian, you needed to work on the big screen. David O. Russell's upcoming project with is solid proof that those days are long over.

Russell will be teaming up with Hollywood icons, and , to bring an epic new series to Amazon next year. Amazon will produce two seasons of the still untitled series alongside the Weinstein company with an ample budget of $160 million budget, making this project the most expensive TV projects ever — smashing the record set by Netflix's $100 million show, The Crown.

David O. Russell will have complete creative control, writing and directing the entire two seasons of the project. Very few details have leaked about the story but rumor has it will investigate the Mafia's role in modern politics. Over his career, the acclaimed director (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) has made a name for himself by blending humanist drama and surreal comedy masterfully. He explores philosophical issues of place and purpose under the surface of an absurd sense of humor — a style that we expect him to bring to a bigger level for this project.

TV production has become a Las Vegas table for high rollers with more studios upping the ante and risking big budgets on big ideas. The last season of Game of Thrones reportedly cost $6 million per episode, and, as mentioned already, Netflix's latest drama The Crown cost around $100 million for two seasons. It will be interesting to see what Russell will do with both 100% creative control and one of the biggest TV budgets of all time to bring his ideas to life.

A Big Step For TV

Nominated on three separate occasions at the Oscars, David O. Russell is arguably the most sought after director in Hollywood right now. His desk is flooded with big film projects but he has chosen to dedicate all his creative energy on this show. Why? Even the hottest directors will still be restricted by the studio's leash on film projects, but this project will allow Russell more freedom and a longer format to fully articulate his creative vision.

Having two Oscar-winning, box-office-smashing legends in Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro will turn the heads of critics and audiences alike. This is new territory for the two powerhouse actors and, like Russell, they'll relish the opportunity to develop characters over a longer format and on a bigger scale. This astounding collaboration is a huge leap forward for Amazon and is a staunch challenge to Netflix's grip on the market.

We will be eagerly awaiting more details of this still unnamed project like hyper kids wait for Christmas. Stay tuned for more news!
