I'm not prone to exaggeration, but finding the right actor for the role of Cable is the biggest casting decision in Hollywood. The half-man, half-cyborg — due to make his live-action debut in Deadpool 2 — is set to become part of the fabric of the highly promising adult branch of Fox's X-Men properties, with the chosen actor facing the huge responsibility of leading the X-Force.
Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick confirmed to ComicBook.com an official announcement is "coming very soon," an announcement that is eagerly anticipated by fans and curiously awaited by those within the industry. There's a growing sense that #Fox is on to something — having opened the R-rated can of worms with Deadpool and built upon that success with Logan — and casting Cable well could cement the X-Force as a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Cable To Be Announced Soon, But They're Big Boots To Fill
With production on #Deadpool2 underway in a few months, casting announcements will be "coming fast and furious," with Cable at the front of the queue. But what are the mutant ingredients Reese and Wernick are looking for in the actor tasked with bringing #Cable to life? Reese explained:
"I think intimidating, scary, a great foil opposite the lunacy. Someone with a great deadpan thing where they can react to someone who's being crazy. Someone who also has a spark of a sense of humor.
"This person has to be funny because they're buddying up with Ryan [Reynolds] and Deadpool so they just themselves to be funny but in a more serious way, if that makes sense. Physically imposing and able to emote. There's real drama and real stakes. It's a tough one."
Taking everything into consideration, Reese is right when he says the decision is tough. Whoever is cast as Cable needs to hit the ground running, and strike an instant chemistry with #RyanReynolds. The dynamic between the two requires a borderline telepathic understanding, and Cable needs to deflect and enhance Wade Wilson's incessant, joke-a-minute joviality.
Almost all modern superhero roles require an element of physicality, but Cable perhaps more so. It's expected the chosen actor will post a mid-workout smartphone shot to Instagram and turn up on set in top shape, but with Cable, physical presence is part of the character, and the chosen actor will need to appear bigger than Reynolds, who himself is brawny.
Cable Will Be A Crucial Part Of The X-Force After 'Deadpool 2'
The writing duo also touched upon the importance of the Cable casting beyond Deadpool 2, identifying him as someone who will need to "command" the #XForce movie, an ensemble flick Wernick believes fans will "go crazy for" once the film is officially announced. That's no small task.
It's an important decision, but the names in the running are brimming with talent and capable of carrying the X-Force franchise. Those linked include Stephen Lang, Pierce Brosnan, Nathan Fillion, Russell Crowe and David Harbour. There has been speculation since Cable's involvement was first announced over a year ago in the #Deadpool post-credits scene, but the wait is almost over. Let's hope it's worth it.
