‘Deadpool 2:’ Who are the Six Pack?
The trailer for Deadpool 2 was a real surprise. Not only did it give an extended glimpse at Cable, in a single scene the trailer revealed that Deadpool will have other powerful allies. It showed Deadpool and Domino preparing to disembark a military helicopter, but they weren’t alone. Three other characters stood with them.
This could be the first incarnation of X-Force. More likely, though, is that this is the group known as the Six Pack – a mercenary team assembled by Cable before he even thought of X-Force. The team has been subtly reworked for the film, so let’s take a look at their membership:
First up is Cable, the one-man war machine who, in the comics, brought the Six Pack together. The trailer introduces Josh Brolin’s Cable, a time-traveler from a grim, brutal dystopia. In true comic book tradition, it looks as though Cable has traveled back to the past in order to rewrite his future.
In the comics, Cable is one of the most complex X-Men characters. He’s actually the lost-in-time son of Cyclops and a Jean Grey clone named Madelyne Pryor, sent into the future to save his life from a techno-organic virus. It’s unlikely the movie will do more than allude to this complicated backstory, though Deadpool is sure to crack wise about it. What the trailer didn’t hint, though, is that Cable is actually a powerful mutant. He’s an Omega Level telepath and telekinetic, but his powers are limited because they’re holding that virus in check.
This was the most surprising member of Deadpool 2‘s Six Pack, given that Shatterstar is actually associated with X-Force. Still, fans recognized his distinctive costume in the background on the chopper. In an interview with Inverse, Colossus actor Stefan Kapičić confirmed that Shatterstar will be in the film. “You can see behind him, Shatterstar,” he noted, “a really cool thing for people to geek out.“
Shatterstar is another complicated character, hailing from a dimension ruled by the being known as Mojo. He was created to be a slave, competing in Mojo’s gladiatorial arena, and is physically powerful enough to knock the Thing out of a building. Shatterstar is best known for wielding strange double-blades, and is a gifted swordsman.
Again, it’s unlikely Deadpool 2 will dive too deeply into Shatterstar’s backstory. Still, the character is most likely set up for Drew Goddard’s X-Force movie, so the backstory may well be forthcoming.
Eagle-eyed fans swiftly identified Terry Crews on the helicopter, and immediately began to speculate as to who he could be playing. The most likely candidate is tough-as-nails warrior G.W. Bridge, who again may be important to X-Force. In the comics, Bridge has been both an ally and an enemy to Cable. In fact, back in the first X-Force run, Bridge was tasked by S.H.I.E.L.D. to hunt X-Force.
It’s possible Fox will use G.W. Bridge to drop in another subtle nod to S.H.I.E.L.D.. The studio has avoided making explicit references to that organization, but it was impossible to miss the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier in the first film. It wouldn’t take much to subtly hint that Bridge used to work for a global organization, setting that up as a continuity nod only fans would get. With Disney currently awaiting regulatory approval to purchase the bulk of 21st Century Fox’s media empire, this kind of nod could ultimately become important to linking successful X-Men spinoffs into the broader MCU.
Of course, Wade Wilson is a member of this team, and he’s a dangerously skilled one. Wilson is very much the wild card in both the Six Pack and X-Force, irritating fellow members as much as he impresses them with his abilities. It will be fun to see how Ryan Reynolds interacts with all these other actors.
Deadpool 2 will introduce Zazie Beetz as Domino, a mutant mercenary who, in the comics, has been a lover to both Cable and Deadpool. (To add to the potential awkwardness she also had a brief fling with Colossus, who’s in the film as well.) Domino is one of the key members of both the Six Pack and X-Force, even founding some versions of the Six Pack herself.
Domino’s skillset is impressive. She can manipulate the fields of probability around her, causing either good luck for herself, or misfortune for others. Combine that with crack marksmanship and phenomenal agility, and Domino is a force to be reckoned with. Imagine a firefight where she effortlessly cartwheels around a hail of gunfire, every bullet miraculously missing; then, her opponents’ guns misfire (perhaps explosively), and Domino returns fire with incredible precision. She may not be a tank like Colossus, but Domino’s abilities make her a ferocious warrior.
A Fifth Mystery Character
The final member of the Six Pack is unconfirmed, and difficult to see in that single shot. A popular fan theory is that #5 is Garrison Kane, a member of the Six Pack who may have a troubled future. In the comics, he was pretty much crippled while on a mission for Cable. Kane wound up in the hands of Weapon X, and was transformed into a dangerously lethal cyborg. He then became a villain for a while, focused on revenge against Cable.
If this is actually Garrison Kane, which seems likely, then it will be interesting to see whether or not the mercenary is already a cyborg. Alternatively, it’s even possible Kane will be injured over the course of Deadpool 2, and may even switch sides.
Whoever that final mystery character may be, the fact remains that the trailer teased a team of six skilled warriors. It’s still possible that this could be an early version of X-Force, but far more likely is that this is actually the Six Pack. The ‘chopper scene suggests they’re a paramilitary organization, and there are certainly six members of the team. Fans will simply have to await a further trailer in order to learn more!
Deadpool 2 opens on May 18, 2018.
