Like most of the population, I was a little disappointed when was announced by Warner Bros. to be the next man donning the cape and cowl. The Internet exploded with negativity towards the choice and some fans have gone as far as starting a petition on “We the People,” the White House’s official petition site, to have him removed from the role. It has since been removed, but it shows how unhappy a lot of fans are with the choice. Ben Affleck was not my first choice either, but after giving it some rational thought, I’ve decided to defend it.

One of the most common complaints since it was announced is Daredevil. A lot of people did not like Daredevil, and Batman/Bruce Wayne is a similar character to a certain degree. I don’t think it is fair to blame the movie on Affleck. He did not write the script or direct the movie. He played the part that he was given and, in my opinion, any actor cast in the role of Matt Murdock would not have saved that movie. If we can take something positive away from Daredevil, it would be that Affleck portrayed a “tortured soul” and sometimes brooding vigilante very well. Also, Daredevil came out in 2003. I think after 10 years and having gained a lot of experience through directing and writing, he deserves a shot.

Ben Affleck has the look of Bruce Wayne. He’s tall, being listed over 6’ 3” with a strong jaw line, which is essential to wear the cowl of the Caped Crusader. He can bulk up, which he will need to do if he is going to be standing next to . He was pretty big in movies like Paycheck and Hollywoodland and I’m willing to bet he can get bigger than that if he has to. Affleck can pull off the suit and tie/tuxedo look really well and the makeup artists/designers aren’t going to put him in a Batsuit that makes him look awkward. They will customize it to look right on him. Let’s be honest, he can pull of a great “5 o’clock shadow” for the grizzled look while wearing the cowl.

The guy has talent, having written and/or directed some fantastic movies these past few years. He was the director on Argo, The Town, and Gone Baby Gone. He wrote Good Will Hunting, as well as the screenplay for The Town and Gone Baby Gone. If you have not seen any of these movies, I suggest you do so. I know acting in movies like Surviving Christmas, Gigli, and Pearl Harbor don’t help his cause, but there is not an actor that exists today who hasn’t done bad movies. Gaining experience through directing and writing has made him a better actor and he is not the same actor that he was 10 years ago.

I think we should all take a deep breath and give this man a chance. He knows Daredevil was not a good movie, and is a huge fan of Batman. He is going to put everything he has into this role. Also, this is not a movie solely based on Batman, so he won’t be the main focus right away. Another thing we should be excited about, if the rumors are true, is the possibility of him directing a Justice League movie. He is a talented director and that can only be a good thing.

So, what do you think? Are you still not sold on Ben Affleck portraying the Dark Knight? Nervous that instead of calling it the Batmobile, we might be calling it the Bat-cah?
