After a long time of what threatened to be development hell, Dark Universe started picking up a bit of speed last month when raised hopes and dropped some details about a project that he (and DC fans) are really invested in.
Total Film recently caught up with del Toro to talk about Mama, and managed to hit on the topic of JLD. There is still no word on which writer he's working with, but he did drop some narrative info that might interest fans. Speaking on the Justice League Dark characters, del Toro said:
I'd love to use the origins that are proper to each character. I love the idea of Jason Blood as a paladin and a knight…. I love the entire Constantine mythology, the Dead Man mythology, the Alex Holland Swamp Thing mythology. These are really rich things to well, and to dig.
That, my fellow fangirls and fanboys, is something to get excited about. Personally, I totally agree with del Toro. Proper exploration and integration of origins in comic adaptations have made some of the best film legacies out there. On top of that, Justice League Dark has some of the most interesting origin stories; I'd love to see Guillermo and his screenwriter breathe some life into Etrigan's bonding with Jason Blood, or properly tell the story of John Constantine.
Does the idea of Justice League Dark get you excited for a del Toro take on the characters?
