The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is enthralling audiences down under and raking in the cash at the box office. The epic film opened on Boxing Day (December 26th), which is a national holiday in Australia.
The directed sequel totally dominated the box office with a 60 percent marked share of the top 5 films and grossed a staggering $4.9 million US dollars.
If racking up the cash wasn't enough, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug also earned the accolade of being the second biggest Boxing Day opening of all time, finishing just 7 percent behind its predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Smaug was also welcomed with open arms and, wallets in New Zealand where the trilogy is being filmed. The movie smashed expectations by clocking up a 4 day gross of $1.85 million US dollars, 10 percent more than The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey earned at its record-breaking debut a year ago.
Overall, the film has being laying eggs like a golden goose internationally, with a total take last weekend of $278.4 million US dollars. Go team Smaug!
