Illumination Entertainment has been churning out box office smashes back to back lately, distinguishing themselves as one of the most financially successful animation studios in the business. Even though their focus has been on Secret Life of Pets over the past year, they're turning their focus back to their landmark franchise: Despicable Me.

It's clear audiences can't get enough of the Minions, but for many fans, what made the original so special in the first place was its heartfelt family dynamic. The franchise seems to be going back to its roots, if this new trailer for Despicable Me 3 is any indication:

As you can see above, Gru is in a tough spot in his life, without a job to provide for his family. The sequel sets up another villain to go toe to toe with Gru, but it also introduces a fresh new face (do twins count?) to the franchise. It will be interesting to see how the twin sub-plot is going to connect to Balthazar, who is voiced eccentrically by South Park's Trey Parker.

As long as directors Coffin and Balda keep the human characters as the priority, audiences will surely come back for more. As the Minions spin-off proved, their inclusion doesn't guarantee a good movie.

Will This Be The Last In The Franchise?

No. Even though it may be the third in the Despicable Me trilogy, Illumination has expressed no interest in ending the franchise. Even Pixar couldn't get themselves to end the Toy Story series, even though many criticized a fourth installment as unnecessary.

Too much of something is never a good thing, but the success of Gru and the Minions is undeniable. This third one would be a good way to say goodbye to Gru and his family. But this will likely not happen, so look forward to new installments every few years.

Even if Gru's journey does end, the Minions are aiming to finish a trilogy of their own, with the Minions sequel hitting theaters on July 3, 2020. Check out the first Despicable Me 3 trailer below:

But for now we can only hope that this year's sequel lives up to our high expectations. Despicable Me is going to be a surefire hit when it releases this summer.

Are you looking forward to Despicable Me 3?
