According to Variety, Boyz n the Hood’s John Singleton will not only helm the biopic but also rewrite the screenplay, detailing the rapper’s tragic life story.

The Oscar nominated Singleton seems like a fine, unsurprising choice (he was once already linked to the project). The filmmaker has the added advantage, though, of having actually directed Tupac himself in 1993′s Poetic Justice.

Singleton had this to say about the subject of his movie:

Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with[...]. His passing deeply affected my life.. As well as countless people in this world … His life story is as important to my generation.
