(WARNING: This post contains spoilers for the movies mentioned)
Don't we all love a bit of #torture? There's something macabrely fun about watching #gory movie scenes and seeing how long you can look without averting your eyes and cringing like a flapping fish out of water. I like to think that I'm actually pretty tough when it comes to watching on-screen violence, but there are a few scenes of torture that I found just too much. Below you'll find my list of the most brutal torture scenes that had me running to the toilet and retching. Unless you're a complete sociopath, there's no way that you'll get through this depravity! So grab the sick bucket and proceed with caution.
5. 'Audition' — Girlfriend Probs
Audition is a wonderful slow-burner type film that begins as a rom-com and then turns into hardcore #horror in the final act. A lovely Japanese man seems to be getting along with a sweet young lady until she suddenly decides to paralyze and torture him. Needles are grotesquely pushed under the eyelids, going deeper and deeper, or should I say, kiri kiri kiri! She then takes piano wire to his foot and slices it off merrily. It’s the sound in this scene that really makes you wince though. Anyone who manages to not look away during this never-ending scene needs to seek therapy.
4. 'Only God Forgives' — Hear No Evil, See No Evil
This neon-soaked nightmare created by Danish psycho #NicolasWindingRefn has many moments of wince-worthy violence. When I saw this film at the cinema, I was sat next to an old lady who jumped when someone got smashed over the head with a glass bottle, so I'm pretty sure her eyes were kept forcibly shut during this extended torture sequence.
Shot in a long, dreamy take, Chang slowly tortures a man in a seedy bar using sharp, giant needles, adding more and more to the intensity. He begins by pinning down his hands and then slowly slices his eyes, before finally piercing the poor guy's eardrums. It's a disgusting moment that had me cringing like crazy.
3. 'Martyrs' — Beatdown
Pascal Laugier's #Martyrs is a little different than the other entries on this list because it doesn't actually try to shock the audience as hard as it can. Everything in this French masterpiece has a reason behind it, but the final 30 minutes of torture is still no easier to watch. It's essentially just watching a girl get brutally beaten and force-fed slop for what seems like an eternity, but because we're so invested in this character it becomes almost unbearable to watch. There's so much emotional weight behind this torture sequence that it has the power to move you to tears. It also ends with her being skinned alive, showcasing some horrifying special makeup effects. It's one of the bleakest and most disturbing scenes to ever be captured on film.
2. 'The Human Centipede 2' — Connecting The Dots
#TomSix hit back at his #HumanCentipede critics with an even more repellant piece of horror. I'm not a fan of the film; it's actually pretty boring for the most part and only gets really hard to watch in the final 20 minutes when we see Martin the mute finally construct his centipede. It's a harrowing sequence purely intended to shock, and it does exactly that. There's nail guns on mouths, knives on knee caps and barbed wire on private places where barbed wire isn't supposed to go! There's also rape and projectile bowel movements for good measure. The whole affair is so abhorrent that Tom Six was forced to cut down some material and release the feature in black and white instead of color.
1. 'Grotesque' — All Of It!
#Grotesque is one of those weird films that has no plot. Directed by Japanese maestro Kōji Shiraishi, Grotesque is 70 minutes of nothing but watching a deranged doctor torture a couple who've just had their first date. It was banned in the UK due to its lack of plot and intensely disturbing nature. There's no avenue of depravity this film doesn't explore; we see everything from rape to an arm being sliced off with a chainsaw.
The most cringe-inducing part though is probably when the doctor snips off the lady's nipples and then bangs nails into the guys testicles. There's also some nasty stuff with eyes and disembowelment that you don't want to watch while eating. The effects range from cartoony to painfully realistic, making it a notoriously difficult watch. It's hands down the most appalling torture sequence in cinema history — the whole damn film is one long torture scene!
Have I missed anything? Which horrific torture scenes can't you stand to watch?
