There's a new, extremely short teaser out there for the upcoming science fiction flick Divergent.
The movie, based on the young adult novel by American author Veronica Roth, focuses on the teenager Beatrice 'Tris' Prior (portrayed by ), who lives in the dystopian future version of the city of Chicago. In this alternate reality, people are divided into five factions representing distinct virtues of humanity: those factions are Erudite (the intelligent), Dauntless (the brave), Candor (the honest), Amity (the peaceful) and Abnegation (the selfless). Tris was born into a family belonging to the Abnegation faction, but was never too selfless herself. Upon reaching the age of sixteen, all teenagers are compelled to undergo an Aptitude Test to determine the faction they belong to. Tris doesn't fit neatly into any one; rather, she shows aptitude for three of them: Erudite, Dauntless and Abnegation. This makes her a divergent, a dangerous status in this segregated world. The movie follows Tris as she finally chooses to join the Dauntless faction, thus leaving her family and transferring to a new one. Once there, while being initiated into her new group, she has to face bullying and harassment from other transfers... and at the same time, failure to qualify in the top ten during initiation means social marginalization and becoming a 'factionless' person. I won't go into the details of what transpires later on in the books, since it would be revealing some pretty spoilerish stuff. Let's just say, it shows a striking similarity to The Hunger Games, but it's also refreshing and entertaining without being too cliché.
Divergent stars, alongside Woodley, , , , , , and . It's directed by and will be distributed by Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment. Watch the teaser below:
