Doctor Strange finally came to theatres last year after years of development. The film starred #BenedictCumberbatch as the titular hero, but many other actors were originally considered for the part.
Ethan Hawke, Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto, Keanu Reeves, Justin Theroux and Ryan Gosling were the names thrown around the character during development. Now we finally have some official concept art that shows La La Land star #RyanGosling in costume as Strange.
We know that Joaquin Phoenix was very close to signing a deal with Marvel studios to play the character but backed out at the last minute. What wasn't so publicly known is that Marvel desperately wanted Ryan Gosling to star at one stage in development. Artist Court Chu put together this piece of Gosling in costume so that #Marvel could get a good visualisation of the casting. Chu added:
“I worked probably not even a day on some version of Doctor Strange years ago, and back then they wanted Gosling.”
Marvel, of course, circled back round to one of their original choices for the character, Benedict Cumberbatch. When first approached to play the surgeon turned sorcerer, Cumberbatch declined due to scheduling difficulties with his play, Hamlet. After #JoaquinPhoenix backed out of negotiations, Marvel came back to Cumberbatch and offered to wait for the actor's schedule to be open.
As you can see from the concept art, Gosling might not have fit the role as well as Cumberbatch did. I'm sure he would have put in a great performance but after seeing Doctor Strange, I can't imagine anyone but Cumberbatch in the role.
You can currently see Ryan Gosling in La La Land and later this year in Blade Runner 2049. Doctor Strange can next be seen in Thor: Ragnarok hitting theatres in November.
Do you think Gosling would have made a good Doctor Strange? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter @JamesPorter97.
