You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out that Benedict Cumberbatch will return to the MCU in Thor: Ragnarok. After all, leaked set photos revealed that the God of Thunder will visit New York City — which just so happens to be where the Sorcerer Supreme lives — and the mid credits scene that followed Doctor Strange all but confirmed that Stephen would return to help #Thor locate Odin.
Despite this, director Taika Waititi has still remained rather cagey about the possibility of seeing the good doctor levitate his way into Thor: Ragnarok, leading many to believe that Doctor Strange's appearance in the film would lead to a short cameo at most.
However, a new post from The Official Disney Fan Club has now confirmed that #DoctorStrange will appear in Thor 3, suggesting that his role may be larger than initially suggested.
“Thor: Ragnarok in November brings together Thor, the Hulk, and Doctor Strange to face off against intergalactic baddies both familiar and new.”
While it seemed before that Doctor Strange would simply help Thor and Hulk on their road trip with a useful spell or two, this official description suggests that the Sorcerer Supreme will actually take a far more active role in Ragnarok. As if that wasn't exciting enough for fans of Benedict Cumberbatch and his portrayal of the good doctor, the D23 announcement also reveals some potentially interesting plot spoilers for the MCU at large.
This Is How Doctor Strange Will Join The Avengers For Infinity War
It's been clear for some time now that Doctor Strange would appear in #AvengersInfinityWar. After all, Marvel's battle royale is set to feature almost every single character from the MCU — holding out here for a surprise cameo from Uncle Ben — and Strange's possession of the Time Stone has basically confirmed this too, as there's no way that Thanos will let Doctor Strange keep one of the Infinity Gems without a fight.
However, now that we know Stephen Strange will accompany Thor and Hulk on their cosmic journey across the galaxy, it's become more likely than ever that the events of Ragnarok will directly tie the Sorcerer Supreme to the Avengers. Both the Green Goliath and the God of Thunder are key players in the team, so the trio's mini collaboration will undoubtedly carry on as the MCU continues to unfold.
What's perhaps most interesting about Strange's involvement in Ragnarok is that it also explains potentially how Thor and Hulk will return to Earth and join the rest of the Avengers against Thanos. Teleportation spells played a crucial role in Doctor Strange's first solo venture, so it's not hard to imagine that the Master of the Mystic Arts will lend a hand at the end of Ragnarok and bring his musclebound allies back to Earth this way.

If director Taika Waititi had access to the Time Stone, we imagine that he'd do everything in his power to turn the clock back and smite whoever decided to reveal this key plot spoiler, but the cat's out of the bag now and not even the Dread Dormammu himself could put this genie back in the bottle.
Fortunately, the news that Doctor Strange has officially joined the cast of Thor: Ragnarok has enhanced our excitement levels tenfold. Any fears that the ever-growing ensemble could draw focus away from our Asgardian hero are hopefully unfounded and with any luck, Waititi's foray into the #MCU will ensure that Ragnarok retains everything that made the first two Thor films a success. Stranger things have happened, after all...
